Yes, he was.

He was originally one half of the package coming to Vancouver as part of a trade with the Argonauts that sent gregarious and sometimes embattled defensive lineman Khalif Mitchell to Toronto.

Interesting. I've always wondered why Commonwealth didn't get a corporate name over time; this looks like a good step forward though. The Brick also sponsors Thursday Night Football and has a long history with the CFL, so IMO it's good to see the League regaining some old sponsors.

I thought Muamba was on their roster already? - or did they cut him and then add him to the PR?

He was Jones' guy at safety for a good part of last season? Fomer Ticat safety King was added in the off-season and he is better than Muamba IMO.

Probably still going to be 7 NIs only need apply there thinking - and similar deployment to last year - a NI platoon at DT (Don O, Alexandre, Steele) and a safety = 2 on D; then 3 interior O-linemen, plus 2 receivers (Watson, Coehoorn, Getzlaf, Bailey - some decent talent and experience to choose from there) = 5 on O<iframe id="rufous-sandbox" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allowfullscreen="true" style="position: absolute; visibility: hidden; display: none; width: 0px; height: 0px; padding: 0px; border: none;"></iframe>

Nice for the fans of Edmonton to show up as yellow and gold seats to welcome the Grey Cup champs as they start their 2016 season. The Argos had to listen to years of BS being slung at them so now it's someone else's turn. The Commonwealth Brick looks like it's about 25 to 30 thou to big at this point.

Update there with regards to CFL team and NI starters: I wuz shocked/stunned to see the RedBlacks go with 9 NI starters in the opening game (3 interior O-linemen + Sinopoli AND last year's draft pick Jake Harty (taking the receiver spot held by import Mo Price last season) = 5 on offence; and then 3 NI D-linemen (Evans & Connor Williams at DT, plus Gascon-Nadon (replacing Capiciotti) + Pruneau at OLB = 4 on D; not only that - Ettore Lattanzio (my Beer Store buddy) got some reps at DT too, as did Lavoie at H-back, and LaFrance at RB (scored a nice TD) ! At least 12 NIs played on O & D ???

WTF are HC Campbell & GM Desjardins thinking there ??? - they could have easily handed a couple of those starting spots to imports (a receiver, a D-lineman). And they upset the defending Champ Esks at home in doing so ? = non-gob bizzarre. ;o) Meanwhile - the Esks went with the basic 7 minimum NIs starting/playing (3 NI starting receivers is pretty non-typical now though). SUCH a "luxury" though to have 11 imports on the D - that really helped shut-down the Ottawa O and limit them to so few points. ;o)

Hoffman-Ellis traded by the Ticats to the Eskimos for a conditional 8th round pick in 2018 CFL draft.

I guess Austin's happy with his linebackers. Ellis can play mike and will, so Eskimos could use him and maybe put Lacey at sam.

Yeah - Jones should be automatically inducted into the CFL and Pro Football HOF in the inscrutable genius coaching category - along with Tom (Ned Flanders) Higgins, Danny (Garden Gnome) Maciocia, Scott Millanovich and all others from coaching staffs who have managed to win a GC in an 8 or 9 team league, in umpteen seasons of getting to try. ;o)

Jones ISN'T the point here; but I guess pointing out that there is (IMO) plenty of Canadian talent to stock the CFL and how a couple of CFL teams have recently had success deploying more Canadians than usual is an insult to the football genius of Chris Jones? Jones is free to deploy as few (miniumum #) of Canadian players as the ratio allows for his CFL team; and certain CFL fans (one particular forum a glaring example of this) & media commentators are free to (and quite often do) bitch and moan about the cliched "ratio problem", call for the ratio to be reduced or generally denigrate the Canadian talent pool available to the Canadian Football League. And I believe I'm free to take the opposite stand - supporting or pointing out Canadian/NI/"National" talent.

There is no point to the majority of your posts. Your posts suggest that a coach will deliberately start an American that is inferior to a Canadian strictly based on bias. That is absolutely ridiculous. I mean, you go on and on about how Pruneau and Capicotti are the best in the league at their positions, and though they are good, they are clearly not the best. Pruneau looked brutal getting beat by McDaniel the other night, and Capicotti is MIA so far this year. Small sample size, but I already know your pre determined excuse if it continues. It's Chris Jones fault as he has no idea how to use Capicotti.

I agree to an extent Angelo. IMO Pruneau is nowhere near elite; he gets beat far too often to be considered elite or the best. I'd put Capicciotti in my top 5 though; IMO he's very good at creating pressure and getting to the QB.

???

Could you maybe dig up the posts here where I claimed Pruneau & Capicotti were "best in the league at their positions" ? Did I read you say here in a recent thread that your guy Condredge was the greatest QB in the history of football? No? - would you like it if I claimed you said that?

Pruneau & Cap are IMO examples of fine young Canadian talent - impact starters on D, and at positions where CFL gobs traditionally like to start imports; the Argos have a couple of their own examples in Greenwood & Miles. And Pruneau - a cover OLB (or any DB in general) getting beat deep for a TD pass ??? - OMG - stop the presses - never seen that happen before = cut the bum and put in an American instead ?

Getting back to the point that you are either trying to ignore or spin away with bogus claims or else just don't understand or accept - the RedBlacks and the Argos are 2 CFL teams that have recently started 9 NIs - as opposed to typical gob 7 only need apply behavior - and are undefeated in doing so. Not that this proves much IMO, but it maybe suggests that some CFL teams have plenty of Canadian talent, and that the 7 only need apply thinking is not an automatic formula for CFL success. There's plenty of NI talent out there, and some teams will deploy/use more than others - the Argos could IMO easily be starting 10 NIs if Bulcke/Waud were healthy. Maybe this bothers your Americans first/better or "ratio problem" CFL thinking you've been told/sold, but, too bad. Sorry for insulting your CFL gob deep thinkers like Kenty or ego-Jones - we shall see how they fare as the season rolls on with their ingrained little use for Canadian talent thinking - maybe they both go to the GC again - possible in a 9 team league ? ;o)

You may not have said they are the best in the league at their positions, but you compare them to others that you always refer to as being mediocre. I just think you overdo slamming other players in order to get your point across over and over again. And we've been through this before. I cheer for Canadian players to do well. Pruneau is a very good player, and admittedly I took a cheap shot at him.

Pruneau is a linebacker not a DB, he's not expected to run down field with a receiver like McDaniels that was a blown coverage.
Ottawa is starting 9 NIs only because of injury, as soon as Hopkins is off the injured list next week and the new 300 pound "D" lineman - Cohen learns the Cdn game then both will be starting and the NIs go to backup
They've done a pretty good job but the criticism in Ottawa is that the "D" line is not getting any pressure on the QB.
But I like the way they completely shut down Messam Friday night, he only picked up 32 yards. It was expected that the big fast Messam would run over the Ottawa "D" line

You obviously have no clue what the strong side linebacker's duties are. It's a DB lining up as a LB in today's football. I think Don Matthews was the first to do this when he moved Don Wilson there in the 90's. On on overload to their side they essentially become DB's covering the slotback closest to the QB.

Hoffman ellis out 12-16 weeks with torn bicep and Thomas Demarco released. TBH, I'm actually shocked Demarco stuck around for this long.

Demarco has been stealing money for years. He is awful.

I agree to an extent Angelo. IMO Pruneau is nowhere near elite; he gets beat far too often to be considered elite or the best. I'd put Capicciotti in my top 5 though; IMO he's very good at creating pressure and getting to the QB.

Not this year you shouldn't.

KCargosfan

Sorry for insulting your CFL gob deep thinkers like Kenty or ego-Jones - we shall see how they fare as the season rolls on with their ingrained little use for Canadian talent thinking - maybe they both go to the GC again - possible in a 9 team league ? ;o)

So this is praise for American coaches Milanovich and Campbell, correct?

So this is praise for American coaches Milanovich and Campbell, correct?

Not sure if it is more the HC or GM who is responsible in each case. Barker singed some proven NI starters (Bourke & Bulcke) this off-season; Desjardins signed Gascon-Nadon as a NI starter FA. GMs might have a lot of say in drafting strategy too - both teams have a good number of draft picks starting/playing for them. The coaches might have to have more faith/confidence in their NI talent to deploy start more than the minimum 7 that some teams pre-determine is only needed. Ottawa has a number of Canadian coaches; Argos do not.

While QB James Franklin is not a free agent in 2017, there continues to be speculation that he may be traded.

James Franklin continues to be a hot topic heading into this year’s off-season (David Chidley/CFL.ca)

This is the move that seems inevitable to some and extremely unlike to others. It depends on how you analyze the Edmonton quarterback position. If you think the team is all-in with Mike Reilly, you’re likely thinking Franklin will bring in so much that GM Ed Hervey has to pull the trigger.
If you’re thinking the Eskimos view Franklin as the future and their next guy, you may believe there is a better chance they move on from Reilly before they’d move away from James Franklin.
But there could be many fits. Montreal, as stated above, is trying to augment the QB spot. Drew Willy isn’t the guaranteed guy in Toronto and of course Saskatchewan has been rumoured to have made a few calls about the young quarterback since Jones took over.
One problem: As stated, who is saying Edmonton actually has any interest in letting him go?

The Eskimos gave LB Deon Lacey, who had a very good season, early release to pursue his NFL dreams.

The Edmonton Eskimos have released international linebacker Deon Lacey to pursue NFL opportunities.
The move was announced Tuesday as Lacey, who was previously a pending free agent on Feb. 14, is allowed to venture south early.
A three-year veteran, Lacey contributed to the Eskimos’ Grey Cup Championship in 2015 before becoming a full-time starting linebacker last season. The 26-year-old chipped in with 87 defensive tackles and 16 on special teams along with three interceptions, a touchdown and a sack.
The 6-foot-2, 229-pound linebacker has played in all 18 games in each of his three professional seasons.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed SB Derel Walker after his early release by Edmonton.

The Edmonton Eskimos granted star slotback Derel Walker his release as he pursues a potential contract in the NFL. First reported by ESPN’s Jenna Laine, Walker has signed a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (https://twitter.com/JennaLaineESPN?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw). The Bucs have since confirmed the signing (http://www.buccaneers.com/news/article-smith/Buccaneers-Add-CFL-Star-Derel-Walker/72609262-aacf-4fc8-9550-be255a7ac3eb).
Walker was scheduled to become a free agent on February 14th.
In just two seasons Walker established himself as one of the most dominant pass-catchers in the league, posting back-to-bak all-star campaigns with 1,000-yards plus. He was also an integral part of helping the Eskimos capture the 103rd Grey Cup presented by Shaw in his rookie season.

Former Argo Vidal Hazelton has resigned with the Eskimos. Last year he did not play in a game after signing with Edmonton, so its possible that he won't make the team in 2017.

The six-foot-three, 212-pound Cincinnati product will have a chance to compete for a spot in training camp alongside up-and-comers Brandon Zylstra and Bryant Mitchell to see who will become the new No. 2 behind 2016’s league-leading receiver Adarius Bowman.
“I’m just happy to be an Eskimo, I’m happy to be here,” Hazelton said upon his arrival to Commonwealth Stadium for his first practice on Oct. 18. “The guys have given me a warm welcome so I’m really excited. ...

<iframe name="fsk_frame_splitbox" id="fsk_frame_splitbox" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-style: none; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; line-height: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; max-width: 100%; width: 620px; height: 0px;"></iframe>

One that won’t come until training camp opens at the end of May, as it turns out, considering the 28-year-old didn’t dress for a single down with the Eskimos.
In eight games with the Argos, Hazelton had 361 yards and three touchdowns on 27 catches before coming to Edmonton, where he became the first Eskimos player on offence to wear the No. 15 since quarterback Ricky Ray was traded to Toronto. ...
The 2017 season will represent another fresh start for Hazelton, who didn’t delve into the circumstances surrounding his release by Toronto, which coincided with that of fellow American receivers Kevin Elliott, Tori Gurley and Phil Bates, after Argos head coach Scott Milanovich publicly questioned the commitment level of his players before saying changes were coming.

I think the signing of Hazelton last year had a large part to do with the expected departure of Derel Walker to the NFL. Esks have been very pleased with the late season performance of Brandon Zylstra and the PR prospects of Bryant Mitchell, but believe that Hazelton can return to his rookie form next season. My personal opinion is that Hazelton will be a starter on the depth chart week one.

There is also no evidence that the Eskimos are ready to trade Franklin to the Riders.

Many have speculated that Jones could acquire Franklin to start for the Riders in 2016. CHED‘s Dave Campbell, however, who covers the Eskimos closely, says it’s not likely in the cards.
“Franklin is going to be very hard to sign and very hard to trade,” Campbell tweeted on Wednesday (https://twitter.com/Dave_CHED/status/821836370482057217). “Best bet is nothing happens unless Jones pays the high price for him.”

He entered the CFL in 2009 with the Blue Bombers. In two seasons with Winnipeg, he recorded 55 defensive tackles and 19 quarterback sacks in 25 games.
The six-foot, 248-pound native of Texas went to the NFL in 2011. He spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles (2011-13), Indianapolis Colts (2014), Detroit Lions (2015) and New Orleans Saints (2015).
Hunt signed in Edmonton in September 2016. In eight games, he recorded 12 defensive tackles and three quarterback sacks.
Hunt is the fourth free agent to sign in Edmonton, joining fullback Alexandre Dupuis, punt returner Kendial Lawrence and defensive back Andrew Lue.

OL Matt O'Donnell has extended with the Eskimos through 2020.

“Matt is a proven leader amongst his teammates,” says Eskimos Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager Ed Hervey. “Matt has developed into one of the most dominate offensive linemen in the CFL. His physical toughness and competitiveness is exactly what we want on our football team, particularly on the offensive line.”
In six seasons, the six-foot-11, 350-pound native of Comox, BC played 67 games (56 starts) at right guard, right tackle and left guard.

The Eskimos hope history repeats itself.

“This is so similar to what happened in 2014,” said Adarius Bowman, the league’s top receiver in 2016. “We had a new coaching staff and made it to the Western Final. The next year we came back and really put the pieces together and won the Grey Cup. Last year we got a new coaching staff and made it to the Eastern Final. I really see the similarities.

<iframe name="fsk_frame_splitbox" id="fsk_frame_splitbox" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border-style: none; font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant-caps: inherit; line-height: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; max-width: 100%; width: 620px; height: 0px;"></iframe>

“I’m excited with some of the additions on defence and coming back having learned coach (Jason) Mass’ offence so we can come out the gate rolling. I think it took a little while last year trying to pick it up.”
The 2014 Eskimos were 12-6. The 2015 team went 14-4.
“Last year was kind of a weird year to be the defending Grey Cup champions with a whole new coaching staff,” said quarterback Mike Reilly of the departure of Chris Jones and his crew to Saskatchewan. “It was kind of like we were picking up where we left off and kind of like we were starting over again from scratch.
“This year it is a different feeling with more comfort because we played for Jason Maas and his staff for a year. You have to go through the fire with guys to learn some stuff. I kind of had that feel after the 2014 season. We did some good things but we just weren’t far enough along to get over the hump. But we knew coming into the 2015 season that we had something special. I get that feeling about this year. The familiarity is there now. We don’t have to get to know each other. I know we have the players.
“Last year we played in four overtime games and lost three of them. And we lost that game to Hamilton an blew a 25-point lead. The difference in a championship team and one that isn’t a championship team is that you win those games.”
The Eskimos ended up with a 10-8 record and had to go East in the playoffs as a crossover team where they lost the Eastern Final in Ottawa.
“I think we’re positive and optimistic because of the things you just mentioned,” said Maas as he shared the stage with the four other coaches at Mark’s CFL Week.
“We didn’t win the Grey Cup last year but we did knock on the door in the East final and I don’t look at our season as not being successful. I think we did a lot of good things and have a lot of stuff to build on.
“I know we’re 0-0 right now but I like what we’re building. I’m looking at the team we ended with last year and I’m kind of looking for that team to just take off.”
If the idea of the first ever CFL Week is to get people pumped for the coming season, short visits with the Eskimos players as they make their stops through the so-called car wash certainly had that effect.
“The thing I really like is that (GM) Ed Hervey and Jason Maas really want guys who want to play for us. They want guys who are more team than self,” said running back John White. “That goes a long way when you are trying to win a championship. You have to have a great core and be a great family.”
Almondo Sewell, a CFL All-Star last year, sees a team that has fixed some holes and is coming back hungry.
“Ed made a lot of changes. On the defensive front four we’re all Americans now. We have a new Canadian back-up now in Corey Greenwood. Hopefully, he’ll be healthy all year. That’s where our main struggle was last year, on defence. He’s addressed the situation and made us better on defence.”
As for the hunger, Sewell offers himself as Exhibit ‘A’.
“This is the hardest I’ve ever worked all off-season,” he said. “I’m taking it very seriously. I’m getting up there in age now. I just turned 30. I’m in way better shape right now that I was in the middle of the season last year. I had a pretty good year but I’d trade all that in for another Grey Cup.

Former Eskimo John Ojo has signed with the NY Jets.

The New York Jets have looked north to add depth to their defensive unit. The Jets signed former Edmonton Eskimos cornerback John Ojo to a contract on Friday. ...
The 27-year-old American missed all of last season with the Eskimos after he ruptured his right Achilles during the preseason.
During his rookie campaign in 2015, Ojo put up great numbers including 41 defensive tackles, five interceptions and one touchdown as Edmonton would go on to beat the Ottawa Redblacks in the Grey Cup. The Florida A&M product was also named a CFL All-Star in 2015.

Edmonton is now holding its first mini-camp under new GM Brock Sunderland, based on the previous GM's decisions, as Sunderland has not had the time to make changes in the team's approach yet.

With so much effort over this past month spent on getting their own house in order during a change in general managers, the Edmonton Eskimos have now switched their focus onto the road.
Coaches and quarterbacks are at the University of Nevada – Las Vegas for mini-camp from Sunday to Tuesday, along with a host of hopefuls aiming to join the roster for the 2017 CFL season.
“It’s an exciting time of year when these camps start going,” said head coach Jason Maas. “Montreal kicked off all the CFL mini-camps (in early April) and any time you hear teams are already getting better, it’s an anxious time of year and you just want to follow suit.
“It’s been a long off-season, bottom line. The last game we played was in November. We’ve made some changes with our players and in the organization and you kind of want to go out and see.”

The interruption made by Ed Hervey’s sudden dismissal on April 7, followed by the hiring of new GM and vice-president of football operations Brock Sunderland did nothing to halt the organization’s day-to-day duties of analyzing up-and-coming talent over the off-season.
“The scouting department’s done a great job going out and locating the players we feel are going to give us the best opportunity to win and now it’s time for the coaching staff to get the eyes on them,” Maas said. “So when you go out and watch guys that are on the field in green and gold that are part of what we do, it’s always going to be an exciting time of year.”
Eskimos scouts and coaches have been hot on the talent trail on the open tryout circuit throughout the U.S. since March 11, and mini-camp offers the first chance to see it all start to come together alongside a few players already under contract.
“It will be the quarterbacks and a small group of guys, whether they were on the practice roster last year or guys that we just feel like we want to see a little bit more of,” Maas said. “We think it’s important at times to get them down there.”
As for the potential new recruits, a final number was still being compiled in the days leading up to mini-camp, but last year’s outing at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla., saw 54 invitees.
“Right now, it’s a fluid number,” Maas said. “More than anything, we’re looking for the best players that we can find, get them all on the field, judge them and, from there, some of them move on.
“The guys we deem can make our team or give our guys a run for the money in (training camp at the end of May) are the guys that move on.”
The spotlight is on a number of positions that lost American starters from last year. Wide receiver Derel Walker (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and linebacker Deon Lacey (Miami Dolphins) went to the NFL in free agency this off-season, while other vacated spots include: D’Anthony Batiste at right tackle, cornerbacks Patrick Watkins and Cord Parks, as well as another American defensive tackle to start alongside all-star Almondo Sewell in a role previously held by Canadians.

EDMONTON ESKIMOS WOMEN'S DINNER PROCEEDS ESCEED $500,000

When Hugh Campbell was the Edmonton Eskimos’ President and CEO, Pam Monastyrskyj was the heartbeat of the CFL team’s front office.

Monastyrskyj spent more than 21 years with the Eskimos’ organization, including 18 years as Campbell’s executive assistant, until she lost a four-year battle with ovarian cancer at the age of 45 in 2005.

The Edmonton Eskimos Women’s Dinner was created by co-workers, friends and fans to honour the woman who was very passionate about the Esks, loved to laugh and represented courage, strength and grace. More than $450,000 has been raised through the annual dinner, which began in 2009 to provide long-term sustainable funding for ovarian cancer research for physicians and researchers at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. That number will surpass the $500,000 mark this year.

“Ovarian cancer, unfortunately, is often caught too late once the cancer has spread so the prognosis tends to be bad,” said Dr. Lynne-Marie Postovit, who leads a team of investigators doing ovarian cancer research in the University of Alberta’s Department of Oncology. “Like any cancer, if we can catch it earlier, we have a better chance of curing the cancer.”

Dr. Postovit is hopeful the recent discovery of “about 10 proteins that we think might be able to identify ovarian cancers” could help detect the disease earlier than usual within the next year or so.

“It’s always hard to be working so diligently on something and not be able to do something right now for that person,” she continued. “These ladies are all so incredibly inspirational so they’re fighting, not just for themselves, but often for their daughters, for their friends, for the ladies who come after them.”

Proceeds from the Edmonton Eskimos Women’s Dinner have been used to dedicate a room in Monastyrskyj’s honour at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women and fund significant room upgrades so the hospital can continue to deliver the compassionate patient care to those in their time of need.

Interest from the Edmonton Eskimos Women’s Ovarian Cancer Research Endowment fund is part of the $1 million in funding the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation provides every year to the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute for sustained research in women’s health concerns and diseases, including ovarian cancer.

Eskimo LG remembers what his 2009 Draft Day was like when he was selected #1 overall by Hamilton.

Edmonton Eskimos offensive lineman Simeon Rottier was so busy in the spring of 2009 that he almost didn’t have time for the CFL Draft.
“I was trying to finish up school and we got married on April 18,” recalled Rottier. “It was just before the draft, so I had a lot on my mind.
“It was an exciting year, for sure,” he said. “Once I found out I was getting drafted, that was pretty cool. That was an exciting day, too.” ...
He became the first member of the University of Alberta Golden Bears to be selected No. 1 in the CFL Draft. ...

“Being a No. 1 pick was cool, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t look at it as all of a sudden I had extra privileges,” Rottier said. “I didn’t look at myself as any better than anyone else who got drafted. … Being picked No. 1 doesn’t mean anything unless you do something with it.
“I was a little bit surprised when they had the ratings out and I was No. 1,” he continued. “I was pretty sure I was getting drafted, right, so I was more thinking about getting a chance. I wasn’t too worried about where I went in the draft, just getting the opportunity, I guess.” ...

Rottier spend draft day with both his family and his wife’s family, although he had to have his phone handy and be ready to answer a couple of questions after he was chosen by the Ti-Cats.
“It was pretty cool to be able to share that with both my families,” he said. “It was a bit of a whirlwind. My goal was always to go as far as I could in football, but when … they said you’re getting drafted, it’s kind of surreal.”

In addition to adding Colquhon, the Esks just drafted (and signed) a bunch of good young Canadian D talent: MLB Chris Mulumba was the steal of the draft in the 3rd round IMO (i guess some teams were scared of some NFL interest or else had no use for a blue chip Canadian linebacker talent?). Safety prospect Jordan Hoover could push for playing time soon maybe - probably much quicker/better athlete than current starter Neil King. And they managed to get a couple of top-rated DEs in Boateng & Mark Makie in the later rounds (again - i guess a bunch of CFL teams have no use for NI DEs ?)

Most likely the Esks go with an all import D-line with the talent they have there now, so Boateng & Mackie can be viewed as just depth or back-up projects; but Mulumba might play soon or some - to spell either Sherritt or Greenwood. Colquhon, along with free agent signing Andrew Lue, might be given a shot to start at corner as part of their 7 NIs only plan? Safety and Greenwood at OLB being 2 other NI D spots? - so then they would need just 4 on offence (3 interior O-linemen, plus just one NI receiver ? - they started 3 NI receivers in their 5 pack some of last season ?)

Infinitely better our relatively good approximation of a democracy over the ultimate expression of political correctness that is fascism.

On this particular issue, the following (excerpted from an entry at cbc.ca) opinions surveyed all deserve to be in play:

Should the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos change their name?
The question has been raised after the U.S Patent and Trademark Office decided in a landmark ruling on Wednesday to cancel six Washington Redskins registered trademarks, reasoning that the name was “disparaging to Native Americans.”

Many people also consider the word "Eskimo" inappropriate and some are calling to have the Edmonton Eskimos name changed. City blogger Ben Freeland wants the name changed because he says it’s offensive and inaccurate. “The name has nothing to do with Edmonton,” said Freeland. “This is traditional Cree territory. We might as well call ourselves the Edmonton Navajo or the Edmonton Aztecs. It’s about as close a connection as that.” Freeland believes the Eskimos name isn’t a big issue in the city because the team doesn’t have an offensive logo to go along with it. ‘ “I think the difference when you compare the Eskimos to say the Cleveland Indians or the Washington Redskins is that… we don’t have a caricature or cartoon character on our jerseys,” he said.

Some, however, don’t feel so strongly about the matter. “I don’t believe that there is any kind of negative connotation to that name,” said Julie Lewis. “I think it’s just historic.”

Others living in Inuvik in the Northwest Territories appear to be split on the issue. “I find it insulting personally,” said Carl Grubin-Fraser. “But there are others that think a team name is just a team name.” “Edmonton Eskimos, to me, is just the name of a sports team,” said Richard Gordon. “Nothing offensive.”

A spokesperson representing the sports team said the organization has no plans to change the Eskimos name.

Well, in summary, the only victim of the Milanovich Massacre that should still playing for the Argos - Vidal Hazelton - missed a chunk of games due to injury, yet still had a quite respectable season and, indeed, post-season production.

We'll see if he makes the team/roster.

Maybe if Maas is one of those CFL thinkers who believes you just have to have a veteran, "experienced" back-up QB around. IMO - having a mediocre like Glenn around is just going to take practice or actual game reps away from young QBs who might have some upside and need work to develop & improve. And rather try to go with a young QB - even in a big late-season game if Reilly was to get knocked-out of action - than rely on the ever average QB skills of Glenn; IMO it's scary & myopic that sees this guy keeps getting CFL chances. GOB deluxe.

I highly doubt in a Grey Cup hosting year, the Esks just signed Glenn to just show up for TC and then get released. Kevin Glenn is a good backup to have IMO, not good enough to be a starter, but good insurance should anything happen to the starter. Maybe you think O'Brien or Jenkins should be the backup ?

I think whoever does best in real TC competition - and between at least 5 other young QBs (when you have lost a highly regarded back-up in Franklin) should be the 2 back-ups; and Glenn is a total waste of time.

But hey - maybe the Argos should have signed this amazing QB talent - in case Ray retires - and give up on Fajardo, Prukop. Bethel-Thompson or any other young QB they might be able to sign.

Nothing wrong with Glenn as a backup, way better than O’Brien but they had a younger rookie that seemed like a good prospect. Threw a deep TD in a regular season game. While a cool piece of trivia, is completeing the cycle something to be proud of? It’s like being proud of the many times you’ve been dumped. Maybe it’s just me.

Edmonton 10 players on their released negotiation list include:

1. QB – Shane Buechele – Texas
2. QB – Case Cookus – Northern Arizona
3. DB – Will Davis – Utah State
4. OL – Josh James – Carroll College
5. RB – Phillip Lindsay – Colorado
6. WR -Jerry Louie-McGee – Montana
7. WR – Steven Mitchell Jr. – USC
8. DE – Zach Wagenmann – Montana
9. QB – Manny Wilkins – Arizona State
10. WR – Shane Zylstra – Minnesota State

Shane Zylstra, Brandon's brother, is the most prominent name on the Eskimo list.

Shane Zylstra WR, Minnesota State University, 6-4, 215 pounds
If Edmonton fans never see Brandon Zylstra (https://www.cfl.ca/players/brandon-zylstra/162103/) in the CFL again, they can take solace in the fact that another Zylstra of a very similar build could be in the wings for them. As a sophomore, Shane Zylstra was the Div II Mavericks’ top receiver last year, with 51 catches for 861 yards and 15 touchdowns.
While in Edmonton last fall, older brother Brandon told Postmedia’s Gerry Moddejonge that Shane is his twin. Shane had a 204-yard game against Minnesota Duluth on Sept. 16 and a 147-yard game on Oct. 7 vs. Augustana. Watching his brother excel in two quick seasons in Edmonton, Shane says he’s already learned a lot about the CFL.

Mike Reilly discusses the Eskimos' mini-camp, which he considers their best ever, below.

“I think it was a combination of things, where we had our entire team there,” Reilly, the league’s reigning Most Outstanding Player, said on the phone from his home in Seattle.
“The other mini-camps that I’d been a part of it was usually the quarterbacks are the only veterans and the rest are free-agent guys.
“For us at this camp it was basically like training camp. We showed up, we had a couple hours of install the first night and we hit the ground running on the field and the guys were going full-speed because they’d been in the system already and knew what was expected. That was part of what I felt was great about camp, was that it was really just an extension of training camp.”
The other half of the best-mini-camp-ever equation ties into the biggest questions that surround the Esks as they head into their actual training camp on May 20.
“I think the part that made me really happy about how the mini-camp played out was that our team has gone through a bit of transition,” Reilly said. “We’ve gotten a lot younger in certain areas of our team, which is necessary if you want to continue to be a championship-calibre team, but you never really know for certain how that’s going to pan out until those young guys get out there and play.” ...

“I felt like the guys that were now slotted in as starters that previously in their careers, because of their youth, were backups and don’t have a lot of experience, they came in and you wouldn’t have been able to tell that this was their first time lining up as a starter. They really played as if they were veterans and I think that bodes really well for what our team will be able to accomplish this year.” ...

“When you have a guy like Odell or Adarius, you lose more than just their on-field production when they’re no longer with your team,” Reilly said. “You lose that locker room presence, that energy. Those are guys that their particular position groups have looked to them to follow their lead and they did a great job for us, obviously. You have to make sure you can replace all of the intangibles that they brought to the team.” ...

“I think our receiving crew is the strongest that I’ve seen it since I’ve been here, in the sense of all the way across the board. Every time that we lined up against the first group, all five guys at the wide receiver position are a weapon that we can use at any point in time. There’s really no weak link and I think that’s kind of going to be our M.O. We’re going to be distributing the ball pretty evenly across the board and that’s exciting for our guys. The only way that’s possible is if they’re all comfortable and ready to go out and perform every route in our playbook and they are.”

IMO Woods is a project, similar to where Sackey was after Year 1. He might develop into a good player but he also might become a Mark Moroz or Matt Sewell -- great size but no stomach for playing. His body language last year on the sideline was not indicative of a guy who was determined to become a contributor. He hung back and did not seem to talk to any of his fellow linemen.

Derel Walker wants to lead the league in reception yardage as teammates Adarius Bowman did in 2016 (Walker finished with 1,589 yards) and Brandon Zylstra did in 2017.

“It’s my goal to be that guy,” he said. ...

Three seasons ago, Walker spent the front end of his rookie season on the practice roster. When he finally graduated to the lineup, he lit up the league, catching 89 passes for 1,110 yards to win the CFL Award as Most Outstanding Rookie and winning a Grey Cup ring. ...

With 38 career CFL games, Walker went into this season with 246 receptions and 3,333 yards.
That’s an impressive average of 87.7 yards per game.
“It’s all because of Mike Reilly. He’s just a great quarterback, man. I can’t take too much of the credit.”
As Reilly’s go-to guy, the sky is the limit for ‘Sky’ Walker.

Beloved Canadian sports legend Normie Kwong passed away in his sleep on 3 September 2016 at the age of 86.

Normie was born on 24 October 1929 in Calgary, Alberta where he attended Western Canada High School and starred on the gridiron. After graduating from high school, he signed to play with the Calgary Stampeders thus becoming the first Chinese-Canadian to play professional football.

Playing fullback, he helped the Stampeders to win the Grey Cup in his rookie season. (Incidentally Stampeder fans introduced modern day hoopla into the Grey Cup in 1948 when they rode their horses through the lobby of the staid old Royal York Hotel in prim and proper Toronto. This was a seminal event in making the Grey Cup weekend a national festival and thus a part of Canada's cultural heritage.)

He was traded by the Stampeders to the Edmonton Eskimos prior to the 1951 season. He led the Western Interprovincial Football Union in rushing in 1951, 1955 and 1956 setting a CFL record which stood until 2012 for the most yards rushing by a Canadian in a season with 1,437 in 1956. He won the Schenley Award for Most Outstanding Canadian in 1955 and 1956. He helped the Eskimos win three Grey Cups in a row from 1954 to 1956. He retired following the 1960 season.

Sadly statistics weren't kept by the WIFU in his first two years but Normie rushed for an average of 5.2 yards per carry between 1950 and 1960 and compiled a total of 9,022 yards rushing which puts him in eighth place on the all-time CFL rushing yardage list. He also scored 93 recorded touchdowns putting him tied for ninth on the all-time list.

His rushing exploits earned him the "China Clipper" nickname and he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1969.

As a Stampeder and as an Eskimo:

http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Balticprince/General Album 3/General Album 3001/Normie_KwongA_zpsdmq9t123.jpg

He was named Canadian Athlete of the Year in 1955 and inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.

But his achievements after his playing career ended were perhaps even more impressive. He was part of a group of six Calgary businessmen who bought the Atlanta Flames and moved the team to Calgary. When the Calgary Flames won the Stanley Cup in 1989, Normie Kwong joined Carl Voss and Lionel Conacher (Canada's Athlete of the 1900-50 half century) as the only individuals to have their names inscribed on both the Grey Cup and the Stanley Cup.

He also served as president and general manager of the Calgary Stampeders from 1988 to 1991 where he laid the foundation for the team being a perennial contender ever since.

In 1998 Normie received the Order of Canada. He was then appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of Alberta on 20 January 2005 serving until 11 May 2010. (To the uninitiated, a province's Lieutenant-Governor is the titular chief executive officer of the province appointing premiers and signing bills into law. While on a day-to-day basis his functions are largely ceremonial, his is the supreme authority in the province under the Constitution.) With his legendary status in both Calgary and Edmonton, Normie was probably the best loved Lieutenant-Governor that Alberta ever had.

Terrell Owen's agent, Jason Staroszik, has triggered the ten day window the Eskimos have to either offer Owens a contract or release him from their negotiation list. I find it hard to believe that a 44 year old man, even one who is second all-time in NFL receiving yardage and third all-time in receiving TDs, but who has not played football in eight years, will have a meaningful impact in the CFL or long survive injury to his middle-aged body.

“He wants to play in the NFL again,” said Jason Staroszik, the Edmonton-based player agent who is representing Owens in his CFL affairs. “He feels like he still has what it takes to play a couple years. But if the NFL isn’t an option for him, this is the next-best option and he is ready and willing to come play here. There’s no hemming and hawing about it. He wants to play pro football still.” ...

“The guy is 44 years old … You put a guy like him on your neg list, it’s either because you want to sign him right now or you saw the same thing everybody else did and thought, ‘maybe another team is going to put him on their neg list, why don’t I try to be the first one to do it?’” said Staroszik, referring to a video of Owens running the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds and change on June 18. The Eskimos reportedly added Owens to their neg list a day later. ...

Staroszik still expects an offer from the Eskimos, but it’s far more likely to be the league minimum of $54,000 than anything that would attract Owens’ attention. The Eskimos would retain his neg list rights for a year and not have to negotiate further. “I’m not expecting the offer they give me to be a serious one that they expect me to take to Terrell,” said Staroszik. “But if they do, then that will show they are serious and they want him here. It’s hard for me to see just because of the American receivers Edmonton has right now. I don’t see them being in the position of needing him. There are other teams around the league that could use an American receiver and could use a name like T.O. to put some butts in some seats, you know.”
Former CFL receiver Nik Lewis seems to think the CFL East is the more likely destination for Owens. “I know for a fact that TO has had interest in playing in the CFL a few times before. I believe he invoked Edmonton to get off the neg list. I believe he wants to play on the east coast,” Lewis tweeted on Monday night.

The Eskimos have made several personnel changes, mostly involving Canadians. The return of LBs Adam Konar and Christophe Mulumba from the six game injured list has led to the release of WR Sam Giguere, a definite upgrade in the team's starting Nationals. National Tanner Doll, Ottawa's long snapper last year, was cut this year before being signed and playing four games for Hamilton before being released again. The Schmoes look done this season - must be a huge disappointment in a GC hosting season.

Ultra limited offence inspite of a top QB like Reilly - wayyyyy too dependent on over-loading on a couple of receivers (Walker & Williams), and too dumb to bang a ground game ( an over-rated Gable is at least half-way capable, but a smart O would work in a 2nd back, plus work in stuff like jet sweeps or H-back gets the ball plays).

And some good talent on D, but can't put it together there.

Maas & Benevedes looking like dullards = see ya - both deserve to be punted way out of town, IMO.

There are lots of questions about next year for the Eskimos: whether Maas and Reilly will be back: reports of Maas losing the locker room; what impact the CBA will have on the team; and how much talent the American Alliance of Football will take from the CFL.

Eskimos beat writer Gerry Moddejonge reported (https://edmontonsun.com/sports/football/cfl/edmonton-eskimos/maas-may-be-losing-the-room-as-eskimos-watch-helplessly-on-bye-week) there are indications Edmonton head coach Jason Maas is losing his locker room, if it hasn’t happened already.
“That’s bullshit,” quarterback Mike Reilly said (https://www.esks.com/2018/10/29/post-practice-qb-mike-reilly-136/).

http://3downnation.com/2018/10/29/eskimos-qb-reilly-calls-report-of-maas-losing-the-locker-room-bs/

Sunderland was asked if head coach Jason Maas, who signed a contract extension through the 2020 season in May, would return for the 2019 campaign. “Right now our sole and entire purpose is on that final game and any and all evaluations, just like any other year, will be done after the season. And that’s the approach we’ll take,” Sunderland said.
While Maas and Sunderland are locked into matching deals through 2020, franchise quarterback Mike Reilly is set to become a free agent in the off-season.

The expiring collective bargaining agreement has created uncertainty for the ability to re-sign Reilly or other free agents. “Well, it’s extremely concerning and it does make it challenging. I would elaborate quite a bit more but we’ve got a strict warning from the league office that we could be fined if we do, so I’ll make a deal with you if you’re open to paying my fine I’ll give you as much detail as you want,” Sunderland said. “Everybody on all parties whether it be the league office, the players’ association, certainly all of us in the roll I’m in – it’s better for everybody I believe if that can get rectified and solidified long before the night before training camp is supposed to open, no doubt about it.”

Sunderland is also worried about the American Alliance of Football taking talent away from the CFL. “That’s almost a bigger concern for me personally and taking with other GMs around the league than the CBA. We’ve lost 12 players off our negotiation list already so it’s extremely challenging,” Sunderland said. “They’re playing less games for more money, they’re doing that in their home country where maybe family and friends don’t have to travel or get a passport. A lot of times if they have a significant other it’s easier for them to get work right there. The big thing is they have a contract where they will let them out at any time to go to the NFL. So it’s hard to compete with that, especially when you throw in the exchange rate and so on and so forth.”

National DL Kwaku Boateng has extended through 2020 with a big salary increase that was well deserved after an excellent season that drew NFL workouts.

The 23-year-old went from making minimum salary on his first contract to national starter money on the new deal. Boateng received a $50,000 signing bonus and $175,000 in “hard money” for 2019 with $30,000 in 2020 for a $380,000 total plus incentives, per sources. It’s potentially the largest jump in salary for a Canadian player who entered the league on an entry level deal.

As a rookie, Boateng displayed the ability to get to opposing quarterbacks even as a rotational player. During his sophomore season, Boateng earned a starting role playing 16 games and recording nine sacks earning team Most Outstanding Canadian honours.

That strong campaign drew NFL interest as Boateng worked out for the New York Jets, Los Angeles Chargers, New York Giants, and Washington Redskins in December.

Harris, Elingson and Sir V all cost big bucks; Ricky Collins & Devaris Daniels added at receiver; Larry Dean and Santos-Knox for their D wouldn't be cheap either. Not sure how they are going to manage being under the $M$ - not like the retirement of Sherritt or the loss of Duke Williams to the NFL or Grymes to BC would mean that much savings ?, and Harris' new QB contract is probably around what they were giving Reilly anyways ? The reasoning below is nuts. Having experience and loving the home city does not make one automatically good at the job. While I am not an avid believer in OV's, GOB theory, this definitely qualifies as an example.

At first glance, the prospect might not have the green-and-gold-clad fan base jumping for joy, given the disappointing 4-14 record in his final season with the Eskimos. His 8-28 record as Als GM has been far from stellar, too. But the CEO isn’t the football guy. Instead, his role is to connect with the fans, the business community, the media and to help the football guys succeed. Reed absolutely checks all of those boxes.

First and foremost, he knows football. By comparison, Rhodes, while undeniably a good man, had more experience in the ketchup and beer businesses, with his biggest success coming from 11 years as a highly respected Reebok executive.

Reed played in the Eskimos secondary for five years and was a divisional all-star before retiring early due to a nasty neck injury.
For the past 17 years, his coaching and management career have taken him from Hamilton to Toronto, to Ottawa, to Winnipeg, to Saskatchewan, back to Winnipeg, to Edmonton as head coach, and then on to Montreal.

All having one constant, however, with Edmonton being Reed’s home. His wife and two kids have never left the city the Reed family loves and, even when employed elsewhere, the 46-year-old former Eskimos player has spent each and every season here. That matters. It matters a lot.

A sad tale of a former Eskimo, International DE Dorian Boose.

Raised with three brothers in a spiritual household in Tacoma, Wash., the gentle 6-foot-6, 300-pound giant learned to play piano and sing gospel long before he hunted quarterbacks. In college, he studied sociology and psychology and was a dedicated athlete who didn’t smoke or drink, not even coffee. ...

So awesome were his physical tools that the New York Jets spent a second-round pick on him, 56th overall, in the 1998 National Football League draft. Soon after, he signed a four-year deal, complete with US$718,000 signing bonus, that could have paid him $2 million as a starter. He was the full NFL package, but he rarely seized the opportunity to impress Jets head coach Bill Parcells. Boose played 44 games over the length of the contract — 34 for the Jets and then 10 with the Washington Redskins — without registering a single quarterback sack. He was an NFL castoff by the end of the 2001 season.

Boose’s tenure in the CFL was even shorter and more contradictory. He played 16 games and was a star of the week three times for the Eskimos in 2003 as they rolled toward that Grey Cup win. Just one off-season later, he was expendable, cut in October 2004 by then-head coach Tom Higgins after showing up out of shape in training camp and playing in just three games all season.

Boose didn’t play again in the CFL. He didn’t go home to Washington state, where his brothers Eric, Zachary and Joseph and his parents Joseph and Evelyn still live. He didn’t return to his boys in Centreville, Va. And he divorced Brenda (who kept her married name).

The best guess is that Boose never left Edmonton. He was known to be working construction at times, living on the street and in the North Saskatchewan River valley at others, or in social housing or with friends. Eskimos teammates said he showed no obvious signs of drug or alcohol abuse while he was on the team, quite the opposite in fact, but at some point after his football career ended, he began using intravenous drugs.

On Nov. 22, 2016, 12 years after his last football game, a year after refusing to enter a treatment program for drug addiction, Boose hanged himself in a south-side Edmonton home, where sources said he was discovered by his then-girlfriend. He was 42.

Chris Presson has been named the Esks president and CEO. His term will begin on Sept. 1, 2019.

Presson comes to Edmonton after spending the past five years as president of the Arizona Rattlers in the Indoor Football League. At the same time, he served as president of the Northern Arizona Suns – the development team for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, launched by Presson in 2016.

Presson’s predecessor Len Rhodes stepped down in February.

The Oklahoma native brings nearly 30 years of experience in sports management, including football, basketball hockey and baseball. He was a part of four championship teams in three sports as an executive:

Oklahoma City Blazers, Central Hockey League, 1996, 2001

The Eskimos have signed Canadian DL Stefan Charles who had 60 tackles and five sacks while playing in the NFL from 2013 to 2016. This gives Edmonton a very good Canadian contingent on its DL, that also includes Kwaku Boating and Mathieu Betts.

Charles was selected by the Eskimos with the 10th overall pick in the 2013 CFL Draft. The Oshawa, Ont., native opted to try his luck with the NFL Draft the same year, but after going undrafted, he’d sign a free-agent deal with the Tennessee Titans. He’d make his biggest mark with the Buffalo Bills, amassing 48 tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery over 37 games with the team. Charles also had stints with the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons.

The 31-year-old opted to make a move to the AAF to join the San Antonio Commanders but after the league ceased operations, he signed a deal with the Falcons at the end of their training camp. Atlanta cut him on Aug. 31. As the Esks still held his rights, which opened the door for him to play in his first CFL campaign.

Charles joins an already stacked Esks defensive line that features the likes of Almondo Sewell (https://www.cfl.ca/players/almondo-sewell/158216/), Mike Moore (https://www.cfl.ca/players/mike-moore/162436/) and Kwaku Boateng (https://www.cfl.ca/players/kwaku-boateng/163191/). The team also signed Mathieu Betts — its top selection in the 2019 CFL Draft — to a contract on Sept. 9.

The Eskimos’ defence has allowed the fewest rushing scores (5) on the season, and they’re top five in rushing yards allowed (101.2) per game.

Former Argo Logan Kilgore may be starting against Hamilton this week as it remains unclear whether former Argo Trevor Harris will be ready to play.

Trevor Harris was back out on the practice field, but was far from a full participant due to an injury to the forearm on his throwing side. It was enough to force him out of the game after a quarter’s worth of work on the way to a 33-17 loss in the Labour Day Rematch, and even with last week’s bye week as a buffer, it could also keep the Edmonton Eskimos starting quarterback out of Friday’s game against the East Division leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats (7 p.m., TSN, 630 CHED).

But there was no official word Monday, one way or the other. “Nope. He didn’t practise today, that’s all I’ll say,” said Eskimos head coach Jason Maas. “He’s still got to see the doctor tomorrow and we’ll make a decision from there.” That put backup Logan Kilgore in the driver’s seat of the Canadian Football League’s top-yards-producing offence, after having taken what were his first in-game snaps of the season in three quarters of relief work in the loss to the Calgary Stampeders. ...

“I think you see a guy getting more comfortable in the offence and more comfortable with the guys,” Maas said. “Our guys that are behind Trevor have gotten reps all year, and Logan’s gotten the most. So it’s not like our backups just sit back and watch practice, they actually get to participate. “But it’s different when you take every (first-team) rep and the onus is on you to have a good day and to let the offence function the way it needs to for everybody to have confidence. There is a lot on the quarterback’s shoulders, so I felt he did a much better job today of that and I think he will continue to do that as he gets more comfortable.”

After the game, Maas was left lamenting he hadn’t prepared Kilgore enough on the way to completing 21 of 28 passes for 242 yards, one rushing touchdown and an interception return for a touchdown the other way. “It wasn’t like this was Week 1 or 2 where he just got done playing a full training camp and pre-season where he’s gotten a lot of live reps recently,” Maas said. “To sit for 13 weeks with as many practice reps as he gets, it’s different when you go in the game for the first time. So I thought he did a very good job.”

While Logan Kilgore did not set the world on fire as Eskimo QB but he did lead the team to a 2-2 record and a playoff spot while Harris was injured.

The Eskimos went 2-2 in Kilgore’s four starts while Harris sat out with an injury to his throwing arm. And those two wins were enough to ensure the Eskimos will reach the post-season for the fifth time in six seasons.
And that’s not a bad little hump to help a team over, especially for a quarterback who spent last season coaching at his former Junior college before being brought in to back up Harris during an off-season shakeup to the entire Eskimos quarterback stable. ...

I just love being out here on a team, whatever my role is,” said Kilgore, who completed 103 of 153 passes for 1,115 yards, four touchdowns and eight interceptions in five-and-three-quarters of work. “Natey (Adjei, receiver) said it great earlier in the year: ‘We don’t need a bunch of superstars, we need guys to be superstars in their role.’ And if all I did was hold field goals all year, I would have tried to do that the best as I could. And I definitely do have a little sense of pride knowing that I had a small part in getting us to one of our goals this year.” ...

“Just like any other week, if Trevor’s back and he goes, I’ve got to prepare the same, I’ve got to be ready to help him any way that I can and then always stay ready,” said Kilgore, adding coming into this season, he would have been “extremely content” if he could have even helped draw up a play or two with his fellow quarterbacks that would have made it into the game plan and resulted in a touchdown. ...

Harris, for one, said the Eskimos couldn’t have asked for more from their backup quarterback. “Logan’s handled himself like a pro all year,” Harris said. “He’s done a tremendous job prepping and being ready to go and asking a lot of questions. We’ve been in constant communication the last week before the game, we met for an hour and a half, just him and I and went through all the plays. Anything he could do, he was doing it to be prepared, to be ready, he’s been the consummate pro and we’re lucky to have him.”

The Eskimos have fired Jason Maas. This could affect Ricky Ray as there was a lot of speculation that Ray would join his former teammate as a coach next year.

General manager Brock Sunderland explained (https://www.esks.com/2019/11/27/gm-vp-brock-sunderland-on-coaching-change/)the decision during a press conference at the facility. ...

“Ultimately, I felt the past few seasons we underachieved as a team… I felt we did have talent and that we underachieved as an organization.” ...

I’ve been open about sharing that sentiment. Since a very good 2017 season with a 12-6 record and West Final loss to Calgary, the Eskimos have struggled to be ‘great’ rather than ‘good’. Three playoff wins in four seasons is a fine result, but 17 total regular season wins in two years is very disappointing for a team led by Mike Reilly and then Trevor Harris, among many others.

“I didn’t want to make a long-term decision on short-term emotion, whether that was the excitement of winning in Montreal or the disappointment of the 2-7 finish and the Hamilton loss.”

Trevor Harris got some press during the playoffs for his comment that there were 46 players in the locker room who would run through a brick wall for Maas. There’s no doubt that Maas was a players’ coach, but ultimately Sunderland was left to make a tough decision in the best interest of the team and the organization.

Linebacker Don Unamba had a previously scheduled appearance with Rod Pederson on Wednesday where he said the move was a bit of a surprise, and further indicated support for the now-former coach.

When asked if the decision might result in a large amount of player movement, Sunderland pointed out that nowadays that happens anyways and major roster turnover is very common.

As is well known, I am a big Milanovich fan. Funny, Jamie Elizondo kind of screwed himself by leaving the RedBlacks over a hissy fit because they didn't grant him late permission for the Riders interview. This just may have been his real legit chance to be a HC.

Two former Eskimos, who had rarely been used in the NFL, had standout performances on the weekend.

Brandon Zylstra caught 6 passes for 96 yards for Carolina on the final day of the regular season. Considering he had caught two other passes for twelve yards over the rest of the season and one pass for 23 yards in 16 games with Minnesota last year, it doesn't seem like the made good use of his talents, especially when only two of their other receivers had more than 300 yards.

A similar situation happened to Duke Williams, who had six receptions for 106 yards in the final game of the season but only six other receptions for 60 yards the rest of the year.

Brandon Zylstra caught six passes for 96 yards in Carolina’s season-ending 42-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Panthers finished the year 5-11 with head coach Ron Rivera having been fired earlier this month. ...

Sunday marked one of the first real opportunities Zylstra has had to make an impact in the NFL following two standout seasons with the Eskimos (2016-2017).

The 26-year-old dressed for sixteen games with his hometown Minnesota Vikings last year, recording one catch for 16 yards. Waived by the Vikes following training camp in August, Zylstra joined the active roster in Carolina and dressed for eight games.

Considering how the Panthers struggled through the air this year — only two wide outs surpassed the 300-yard mark this season — one could argue Zylstra should have been given a larger role. ...

Williams made six receptions for 108 yards in the Buffalo Bills’ season-ending 13-6 loss to the New York Jets. The 26-year-old is in his first season with the Bills and dressed for the first time since October following eight weeks as a healthy scratch. He finished the regular season with 12 catches for 166 yards and a touchdown.

Buffalo finished the season 10-6 and will visit the 10-6 Houston Texans in next week’s AFC wild card game. It remains unclear whether or not Williams will dress for the post-season contest, which will be just the second such game for Buffalo in 20 years.

The Eskimos are surprised that the Argos did not pick Tomas Jack-Kurdyla and feel they had a couple of other pleasant surprises in their view.

the Toronto Argonauts spun the Canadian Football League Draft on its ear when they didn’t take Tomas Jack-Kurdyla at No. 2.

That left the Edmonton Eskimos picking fourth overall with the top-rated offensive lineman — the top one not signed to a National Football League contract, anyway — landing right in their lap.

One drafter not in the Eskimos or Argos camps called it the surprise of the night with, “Edmonton getting the O-lineman Toronto should have taken, passing on the Buffalo guy from just three hours south.”

And it wasn’t the only pleasant surprise of the evening for Eskimos general manager Brock Sunderland, who may just have scored big with a couple of late additions, taking Fort Hays State kicker Dante Brown in Round 5 (41st overall) and Wagner offensive lineman Chris Gangarossa in Round 6 (50th overall). ...

“Those are the kinds of late-round picks that can make a difference,” said one league personnel man, pointing out Gangarossa had been pegged as high as going in the top 20. “I didn’t think he was going to go in the first round, but I thought he would go in the second round, or at worst, an early third rounder.” ...“I don’t think Gangarossa’s a sleeper, I’m actually shocked that he was available,” Sunderland said. “We had him pretty high. He was one of those guys where, as we were selecting where we took him, we were a little baffled that he was there, so that one was more of a surprise to us that he was available. “We like him. We like the fact he can play guard and tackle and played at a high level, at Wagner, played for an NCAA team.”

Below is a discussion of a couple of the Eskimos draft picks by GM Brock Sunderland:

The nine newest faces on the Edmonton Eskimos will have to wait a while before they can physically step foot onto the field with the team. But that didn’t dampened the mood of general manager Brock Sunderland following last week’s Canadian Football League Draft, which saw the Green and Gold bolster its National depth at all three levels on defence, while also adding a trio of offensive linemen, a running back and, yes, even a kicker in Fort Hays State’s Dante Brown, who could prove to be a shrewd choice at 41st overall in Round 5. ...

Aside from O-lineman Tomas Jack-Kurdyla, taken in the first round (fourth overall), who is by all accounts as ready to step in and play at the professional level as much as anyone up for grabs last week, the Eskimos doubled down with a pair of defensive linemen. .. Selecting offensive lineman Tomas Jack-Kurdyla fourth overall means the six-foot-four, 300-pound Montreal native will be available for the Eskimos’ training camp – whenever that may occur – and be able to play when needed. “We went with someone whom we thought would be here that we could count on from Day 1,” said Brock Sunderland, Eskimos General Manager & Vice President of Football Operations. “He was the highest guy on our (draft) board at that point. It’s always been my philosophy to take the highest player available, no matter the position.

Alain Pae, taken 13th overall in Round 2, and Rossini Sandjong, the 59th overall pick in Round 7, heard their names called by an Eskimos team already breaking the ratio at one defensive end position, and are on track to make it both, one day. The drafted rookie pair will pad the depth chart behind the tantalizing talents of Kwaku Boateng and Mathieu Betts already on the roster. A six-foot-four, 238-pound native of Prague, Czech Republic, Pae played for the Prague Lions of the Czech League of American Football for two seasons before joining the Ottawa Gee-Gees in 2017. “His size and athleticism, he jumped off the film. If you have someone, even if you weren’t evaluating him, and he would jump off the film and you would notice him, that’s someone you want to look at deeper, he did that,” Sunderland said. “Very explosive, has good size. He has not played for a couple years, we’re aware of that but he’s in shape and has been working out recently. ...

In his one and only season of U-Sports eligibility, Pae was named to the Ontario University Athletics Conference all-rookie team after earning 25.5 tackles and six sacks in eight games as a 25-year-old. ...

The thing is, Pae, now 27, is already coming in with pro experience, albeit not on North American soil. But in the two years playing with his hometown Prague Lions, he earned 46 tackles in 10 games, including three for a loss, as well as five sacks and eight more quarterback pressures. And that makes him exactly the type of player league commissioner Randy Ambrosie is looking to open the door for through his global CFL 2.0 initiatives. ...

Fortunately, for both Pae and the Eskimos, he had become a Canadian citizen after following his father, Allen Pae Sr., to the Canadian capital, where the elder Pae has lived for 15 years. And that had Alain on the CFL’s radar on the day of its national draft, along with a 40-yard sprint time of 4.65 seconds and 10-foot, two-inch broad jump.

I agree. But at least they did one good thing last week in releasing Christion Jones after his homophobic tweets.

The Edmonton Eskimos (https://globalnews.ca/tag/edmonton-eskimos/)‘ organization has removed kick returner Christion Jones from the team roster, following a tweet the player sent out Saturday evening with anti-gay and anti-lesbian (https://globalnews.ca/tag/lgbtq2/) sentiments.

Nothing out of Edmonton, yet. REALLY?

It's increasingly looking like Edmonton will change it's name with Washington's official announcement of a name change today and Edmonton losing sponsors similar to what happened in Washington.

As pressure mounts for professional sports teams to shed racist or stereotypical names, experts believe the Canadian Football League's Edmonton Eskimos will soon announce a name change.

On Monday, the National Football League's Washington Redskins announced they would retire their name and logo after pressure from sponsors.
<section id="inread-wrapper-id-34625174" style="font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"></section>
The last thing management wants is for people to be talking about the name of the team, said Marvin Ryder, an associate professor of marketing at McMaster University's DeGroote School of Business. "Anybody talking about the name of your team, rather than the performance of your team or the athletes on your team, that's the wrong message. You want that to go away." When fans, players and sponsors start to say they feel uncomfortable with a name, a team starts to pay attention, he said. ...

Some sponsors of the Edmonton Eskimos also seemed uncomfortable with the CFL team's name.

Insurance provider Belair Direct said last week it is rethinking its premier partnership with the team. A spokeswoman said the company "will need to see concrete action in the near future, including a commitment to a name change."

Boston Pizza, another sponsor, said "as part of a larger shift in our overall marketing strategy, Boston Pizza recently ended its sponsorship of Edmonton's CFL team."

I have mixed feelings about the name change but if racial or gender groups are offended by the names, then I lean towards changing the name. As Warren Moon said, he previously saw nothing wrong with the Eskimo name but realizes this is not the same with everyone and so supports the name change. It seems the loss of sponsors by both the Washington and Edmonton helped trigger the name changes, with the sponsors responding to public pressure.

Never. Those who fought this hard on social media will forget about this 'victory' in short time. The outrage mob moves quickly to the next act, the next pleasure, the next hit of dopamine. Discontinuing the use of the name is not enough, now the demand for apologies and further reconciliation. The outrage mob moves on.

You can debate on how sincere the Team was in engaging northern communities in this conversation, the polling and the promise of continued engagement but in the end, this wasn't decided by the Team on their own terms, nor was it decided by the Inuit as a community, that is clear.

The conversation, which should have always been focused on how the Inuit as a community feel, went right to stopping racist name at whatever the costs. A "Don't worry Inuit, we got this for you, sit back." Seemly, a perverse type of racism in it's self. It's as if the activists assumed the Inuit were too fragile/hurt to speak up for themselves. I am not discounting individual experiences and feelings by people, this was an social media observation oh who was mostly doing the "fighting", including the Board of Directors of the Corporation that made a public threat, instead of making their concerns in a more private manner. It's very easy for both people and corporations to score "Social Points" off the backs of another's annihilation.

The point here is that is wasn't clear Canadians decided that the "canucks" is a derogatory term, but more like southern US Americans (for which by some of the southern US population "canucks" IS used in a derogatory manner). To use this in an analogy everyone can understand.

As for the name change it's self, for people who call themselves CFL Fans, this should not be considered either a victory or a defeat, but a realization of the times. For some, this will bring sadness and a sense of loss as they have grown up with the name. Those CFL Fans who celebrate the change do so without understanding what other people have lost.

“We did register some segment of Empire several years ago simply because that was our marketing campaign. But I do think there is too much of a negative connotation around that for that to be our name.”

Empire has a connection to colonialism, which is a practice of domination and involves the subjugation of one group of people to another.

I found it pretty funny how a large number of fans (on social media) who agreed the Esks name was an issue also then pushed hard for Empire. Colonialism was my first thought. Like what Empire? Counter productive if you want patch things up with the Inuit population.

My feelings exactly. If you are going to change the name over sensibilities of people who were/are oppressed, Empire, the very definition of the use of power to control others regardless of what empire was involved, makes no sense at all.

Of course, if they were to get creative and change the logo along with the name, they just might make a ton of money in new merch sales. Apparently that's what happened when the Washington Bullets changed to the Wizards.

Sorry to say, as a fan in his early 50's it's clear that the CFL could care less about me and is all in/doubling down on mob rule SJW's, an audience that largely doesn't even watch CFL football or sports in general, for that matter. As the league continues to destroy its' history and ram leftist political ideology down my throat, I'm no longer interested in watching a league that I did support for 40 or so years. You'll probably scoff me off as irrelevant, but that's pretty much what SJW culture does, doesn't it? So goodbye CFL until you show me that you are willing to value tradition and will once again become apolitical in public policy.

Good.

Right!

I believe that since Italy was part of a fascist/racist military alliance with the German NAZI party - an alliance which wished to rule the world an exterminate countless minorities in the process - it's only fair that we erase all references to Italian culture and people having Italian sounding names should be forced to change them to a more culturally sensitive alternative that won't offend people.

OK. So you are saying this because you think I'm Italian? You come across as a major idiot.

The people you are talking about are very adept at social media, trying to cancel other's opinions and putting themselves into positions where they can control the narrative. But ordinary folk are getting smarter and now seemingly less patient and hopefully will stand up before a force that won't be good for anybody comes along.

I think a lot of people can identify with your thinking.

TSN's all-time Edmonton team is described on the url below. As great as Ricky Ray was at QB, I would have picked five time in six years Grey Cup winner Warren Moon as the team's QB. I also would have picked James Quick Parker for the DL as he defined what a rush DE is.

Parker had a longer, more dominant career with the Lions than the Eskimos, did he not?

I agree re Moon over Ray. Altho TSN selected Moon as a "foundational" player, something they likely could not have justified with Ray.

I note equipment manager Dwayne Mandrusiak was selected as foundational. IMO TSN should bestow the same honour on Danny Webb, perhaps negating the need to name our long snapper to the team solely to meet the "one current player" requirement.

TSN still named Sewell to the Edmonton team so I don't think the Argos will dodge that requirement.

I agree it was a silly requirement, for the Argos it creates the biggest problems.

An Angus Reid poll of Canadians and CFL fans about the Eskimo name that also questioned the league's fanbase demographics found differences in opinion not only about the team's name but also about the demographics of the fanbase.

A recent poll by the Angus Reid Institute (http://angusreid.org/edmonton-football-name-change/) (no relation to former B.C. centre Angus Reid) found that while the majority of Canadians approve of the Edmonton Football Team’s recent decision to change its name from the Edmonton Eskimos, (https://3downnation.com/2020/07/21/edmonton-discontinues-use-of-the-word-eskimos-in-teams-name/) the majority of CFL fans are in opposition.

The online poll was conducted over two days with a representative sample of 1,519 Canadians who are members of the Angus Reid Forum. It showed that while 57% percent of Canadians approved of the change, 55% percent of CFL fans did not. There was a significant regional disparity as well, with Alberta (58%) and Saskatchewan (54%) being the only provinces with majority disapproval. ...

The name change was overwhelmingly favoured by young people, women, those with a university education and those who voted Liberal or NDP. The only demographics in which the majority was opposed to the change were men over the age of 55, those with a high school education or less, and Conservative voters. Coincidentally, those demographics were disproportionately followers of the CFL.

The poll pointed to significant demographic challenges faced by the CFL, with just 5% of respondents identifying themselves as die hard fans and 14% as casual fans. Those numbers were skewed significantly towards older individuals with just 13% of those under 35 identifying as a fan compared to 26% in the 65 and over category. Fandom was particularly clustered in low population provinces like Saskatchewan and Manitoba, with marginal interest in Ontario, Quebec and B.C. ...

The Edmonton name change appeases demographics that the CFL desperately needs to attract, but it remains to be seen if it will move the needle in a positive direction or alienate the league’s core base.

When it comes to a new name, 26% of those polled thought Eagles would be the best nickname while those in Alberta preferred the Edmonton Energy. The Edmonton Elks, a name once used by the club before Eskimos, was the second most popular choice among both groups.

Rooted in the evils of fossil fuel production and consumption, I suspect environmentalists will find this highly offensive.

Chance of a lifetime for Edmonton. Everyone is thinking of how to keep the EE. I would go for Alberta over Edmonton in an effort to broaden appeal and tick off Calgary.

"Alberta Proud". Team would be known as Alberta, the Proud, or the Alberta Proud. Might heat up the already hot Labour Day rivalry.
