Yes I do. I'm not really into fantasy games usually, but I did enjoy the CFL pickem last season; especially the confidence points - it could either really hurt you or help you.

I am playing under protest. I was under the impression that only the game against BC counted for Argos players in the week they played 2 games, and apparently, I am the only one that didn't take any of them that week.

Who's playing this year and how are you doing? Handle ARGOZ, I have 492 points, good for 23 in Argofans and 22 in TSN1150. Matt Nichols hurt me last week, but I'm averaging almost 100 points per week. I find sticking to home teams usually works best. What tips work for you?

Foxhound

I kicked butt in TSN CFL Fantasy last year under the name of Balticfox! I finished 62nd overall but I topped a number of sub-leagues including these big ones:

TSN 1040 Vancouver 1/196
TSN 1050 Toronto 1/178
The Angry Birds 1/133
TSN 690 Montreal 1/96
2017 CFL All-Stars 1/45
Blue Bombers 1/41

Well I'm back this year to both defend my titles and to add a few more straps around my mid-section! I'm doing alright again so far. If I remember correctly I was 282nd overall after five weeks yesterday morning. In the meantime I've started several Fantasy Leagues for hardcore old-time Argonaut fans:

For Cookie Gilchrist fans:

Chester's Cookies (https://fantasy-api.cfl.ca/en/league_invitation?league_id=3421&code=bd4230ec-4218-435b-9a7a-210148d3bbb9)

Dick's Shadow (https://fantasy-api.cfl.ca/en/league_invitation?league_id=3423&code=bc7080ad-f728-4682-8ecc-da1062a97feb)

For Jackie Parker fans:

And for Mike Clemons fans:

Pinball Wizards (https://fantasy-api.cfl.ca/en/league_invitation?league_id=2533&code=6dbd25c1-8df5-439a-8e10-a88cd3f367e1)

So out of the sixty or so players available to be picked from the first two games this week, Scout the Cat, a participant in most of the sub-leagues that have been mentioned in this thread, selected only two. But they were by a wide margin the top two point getters so far this week, Brad Sinopoli with 34.1 points and Emmanuel Arceneaux with 28.2 points! What a start!

Foxhound
07-22-2018, 04:08 PM
So Scout the Cat also had Andrew Harris yesterday and his 31.7 points, meaning she had all three of the highest point producers this week. Argo QB James Franklin(4.5 points) and RB James Wilder(10.0) kept her score from reaching nose bleed levels, however.

I'd be smoking a fat cigar right now (in an elevator of course) had I stuck with Andrew Harris for a sixth straight week instead of investing so heavily in Stampeders.

So Saturday evening my spouse was complaining bitterly about the lack of production she'd gotten from James Franklin her QB pick. "But on TSN the analysts all said he was a smart pick!" she protested.

"They lie" I replied. "You can't trust those guys. They'll always steer you wrong in the end."

I sometimes make the mistake of reacting too strongly to something that happened the week before. For example, Wilder was excellent in the first game against Edmonton so I took him for the return match-up given that Edmonton had also struggled against the run vs Hamilton in Week 2. Obviously, Edmonton put a much better effort against the run and was able to contain Wilder. I've also took Franklin as a "bargain" the last few weeks, but he hasn't produced a really good week yet.

I'm really displeased with my play and results in Week 7. Trying for more upside potential on Tuesday I switched from Weston Dressler and the Eskimos defence to William Powell. Then late Thursday afternoon I dropped William Powell (very inconsistent results) and Brad Sinopoli to add Andrew Harris and Darvin Adams. Sticking with Brad Sinopoli, Weston Dressler and the Eskimos Defence would have gotten me a lot more points.

Then I didn't see that Don Jackson had been scratched from the Stampeders' roster three hours before game time. Of course I can't be on the stupid computer 24/7, but DRAT!

I just made too many poor decisions this past week, that's all.

08-02-2018, 01:28 PM
In six of the first seven weeks, I've ended up noticeably hurting my results by switching from the players I'd initially selected on Monday. This week therefore I've resolved not to dick with my initial roster barring disaster, e.g. a player comes up lame at practice and can't play.

So a modest investment of $6000 on McLeod Bethel-Thompson returned a sensational 31.5 points yesterday evening! Even better a measly $6155 on Diontae Spencer yielded 38.7 points and an even paltrier $5344 on S.J. Green returned 34.4 points.

Unfortunately I was only perceptive enough to calculate these stellar returns after-the-fact....

I stayed away from this game because it was too hard to predict. No doubt some fans took Spencer but only homers would pick MBT and SJ going into this game. Good on them though. I'm counting on Banks and Massoli tonight.

When Jeremiah Johnson pulled up lame at practice, I chose C.J. Gable who ended up getting 13.1 points as a replacement over Chris Rainey who ended up getting 18.0 points.

Much worse yet I had Kevin Elliott on Tuesday morning. Then Wednesday I saw that Kevin Elliott was not pencilled in as a starter the way he'd been the previous week but was "only" the backup to Emmanuel Arceneaux. I therefore immediately switched to Shaq Johnson. Well Johnson got me a big fat zero while Kevin Elliott notched 18.9 points!

Scream and double scream!!!

I was disappointed with my Fantasy results over the course of the regular season. I finished 62nd overall last year and I'd set a top fifty goal for myself this year. I ended up in 254th though. Worse yet, I think I beat all the TSN and CFL pros last year, but I slipped behind some of them this year:

Chucky9192 - 2023.1
Kristina - 2002.7
Krev Show - 1976.6
Balticfox - 1950.3

The only League of any size I topped this year was the 60 member 2017 CFL Fantasy. I was second by half a point in the 89 member 2017 CFL All Stars.

Unlike last year I got off to a very good start this year. After six weeks I'd climbed to #89 or so. But after that I started spinning my tires.

I didn't learn that Don Jackson and C.J. Gable were game-day scratches in weeks seven and thirteen respectively until after kickoff. Then Reggie Begelton limped off the field after the first play from scrimmage in week sixteen. Those zeroes hurt badly. I'd been fortunate enough to avoid disasters of such magnitude last year.

I had difficulty with QBs this year. Whoever I picked last year from among Mike Reilly, Ricky Ray, Matt Nichols, Travis Lulay, Trevor Harris and Jeremiah Masoli typically treated me pretty well but that wasn't the case this year and I ended up picking some duds.

Brandon Zylstra was the gift that just kept on giving last year and D'haquille Williams, Andrew Harris and Don Jackson filled the same role for me in the first six weeks or so this year but then their prices got so high I had to reconsider. And I couldn't find any semi-reliable replacements other than Brad Sinopoli.

That though may have been the problem with my game this year. I was too focused on getting "value" for my $. As a result I was just too reluctant to pay up for players and missed out on too many stellar performances by Brandon Banks, Luke Tasker, Diontae Spencer and Alex Green.

I also got much "better" at fully allocating my $40,000 this year. I was never satisfied until I'd allocated all but $200-$300 of my budget. I'm afraid therefore that I ended up with a roster closer to $40,000 in price at the expense of taking the "best" players at each position I could afford even if they only totalled up to $37,900.

Oh well. Live and learn.

So the CFL season and TSN CFL Fantasy kick off again on Thursday evening with the Roughriders visiting Hamilton. It's time again to get our picks in!

In the meantime, please join some or all of these Fantasy Leagues I've created:

Balticboys (https://fantasy-api.cfl.ca/en/league_invitation?league_id=1001&code=4ec80c6b-55b2-422e-a6c8-f167b7bd3b00) (for those of Baltic ancestry)

Pinball Wizards (https://fantasy-api.cfl.ca/en/league_invitation?league_id=2533&code=735767fd-036c-43a5-a6ab-9c83afacaecd) (for fans of pinball machines and Mike Clemons)

And no, I do not get any Fantasy point credits for inducing people to join the Leagues I've set up. The reason I've been beating the drum trying to get more membership for all these Leagues is just because. It's frustrating and disheartening to set up a cool sounding League and getting next to nobody joining. So please join!

I still wish they'd add a Kicker back into the selection options for CFL Fantasy though. Say allow players to allocate $50,000 for a QB, two RBs, two RBs, a FLEX, a Kicker and a Defence.

Definitely should have a kicker. I would like to add players all over the board. Even a second QB would be beneficial. So many times last year, a QB would go down and you would be screwed out of huge points.

I believe there were over 22,000 participants in TSN CFL Fantasy last year but there are only 12,855 participants so far this year. I suspect that the lack of timely promotion for this year's game had a lot to do with the drop in numbers.

It seems I can't pick WRs this year if my life (or at least my Fantasy score) depended upon it. In Week One I picked reasonably inexpensive receivers who had come into their own late last year playing for teams with solid established QBs:

Bralon Addison - 2.6
Markeith Ambles - 9.6
Reggie Begelton - 10.5

The results were at best underwhelming.

In Week Two I picked two very decent but not super expensive Eskimos' receivers upon the premise that Trevor Harris would have to throw to somebody other than Greg Ellingson occasionally:

Ricky Collins ($4273) - 2.1
Kenny Stafford ($4661) - 3.5

Wrong again. Very, very wrong!

Hopefully I won't continue to be mistreated and abused by my WRs. It's not nice, that's for sure.

I am absolutely bloody livid today! I spent $11,060, the price of a very good QB, on two positions and I emerged with -1 points yesterday evening! Mathematically there was no way I could have made two worse picks! And of course I briefly considered William Stanback (43.9 points yesterday) whom I rather like for my lineup but logically Sean Thomas-Erlington made far more sense at basically the same price....

I'm so angry I almost stormed City Hall this morning!

So this week is unfolding as all the others so far this season. Right now I'm ready and raring to go in the full expectation that I'll crush all opposition with my shrewd selections. By late Saturday evening though I'm likely to be mired in another morass of self-recrimination wondering what the hell I was thinking earlier in the week.

And so it was. On Thursday I made a last day adjustment dropping the Montréal Alouettes Defence and Lucky Whitehead in order to pick up the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Defence and Kenny Lawler. Well what I had would have yielded 8+10=18 points while that to which I switched yielded 3+3.9=6.9 points. Therefore I cost myself 11.1 points with the switch.

Then Qwan Bray appeared to catch a 29 yard TD pass in the third quarter of the game against the RedBlacks and I was celebrating! That would have been 9.9 points for my Qwan Bray and another 5.1 for my Vernon Adams Jr. but the play was ruled an incomplete pass by the command center. So 15 points evaporated from my score. And then Vernon Adams Jr. who had gotten me 17.3 points to that time was injured on the subsequent play which would not even have occurred had the previous play not been called back!

So in the end I ended up with a barely adequate total of 92.1 points.

So Montréal was the scene of yet another disaster for me over the weekend. I had both Roughriders' QB Cody Fajardo and WR Kyran Moore who had done alright for me to that point when the game was called due to lightning with 2:41 left to play in the third quarter. Extrapolating their performance to that point, the truncation of the game cost me 8.5 or so points although I suspect that it probably cost me many more.

In any event, I didn't have any of the big stars for the week, e.g. C.J. Gable, Bryan Burnham, John White, etc. In fact instead of Burnham and White I had the Tiger-Cat duo of Braley Addison and Cameron Marshall with their underwhelming point totals.

So all in all I ended up 67.7 points which was far and away my worst total of the season. Had the game in Montréal been played out, I think I had a good chance of ending up with a respectable total of over 80 points.

I'm still seething with frustration.

So I stumbled out of the gate last week with a pathetic 9.9 points for my total investment of $13,480 in Andrew Harris and Kenny Lawler on Thursday evening. Meanwhile the Blue Bomber Defence which I didn't have notched 22 points. Friday's game between the Eskimos and the Argonauts left me in yet deeper gloom as the much vaunted Eskimo Defence which I had netted me a whopping 4 points while I had neither of the two best picks, Trevor Harris with his 42.1 points or Greg Ellingson with his 39 points.

The rest of my picks were actually quite good though. And late Saturday my $6054 investment in Nick Arbuckle turned into a whopping 31.6 points!

So after a woeful start I ended up breaking 100 which was my second best week this year!

Each and every week my most basic underlying objective is to get double digit production from each and every pick. It's very tough to do though and I think I've managed that trick only once in the past three years earlier this season. Well I came awfully close again this past week:

https://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Balticprince/Week%2011_zpsepqvwtef.png

John White IV was going like gang busters with 53 yards on four carries and one reception for 23 yards, but didn't make it to the end of the first quarter. He limped off with an injury after being tackled and never made it back.

I made a monumental gaffe yesterday. I lost track of the time and didn't check the Depth Charts for the two Labour Day games until just minutes before 3:00 PM. I was then appalled to discover that the two players with which I'd filled my RB slots, Branden Burks and Cameron Marshall, would not be playing. I quickly deleted them and decided to move Johnny Augustine from my FLEX pick to a RB pick so I'd have more flexibility when it came to refilling my FLEX slot. But like I say, I'd lost track of the time. The TSN Fantasy program allowed me to delete Johnny Augustine but in the five to ten seconds it took me to click his name into a RB slot, the clock hit 3:00 PM and I was frozen from re-adding Johnny Augustine's name!

Augustine ended up getting 14.5 Fantasy points.

So to make a long story short, after the Three Stooges technical blunders I pulled with my Fantasy lineup just prior to the game in Regina yesterday, I now really need Trevor Harris to put on an air show versus the Stampeders on today. I need 35 points in total from the RB and WR I ended up having to pick because of my blunder or I'll have lost out and thus be contemplating flinging myself from my front porch onto the garden below.

:ohno:

So because I fell asleep on the Depth Charts and then bungled Johnny Augustine right out of my lineup at game time, I ended up with Anthony Coombs and Ricky Collins who got me a grand total of 13.3 Fantasy points. The Johnny Augustine and Shaquille Evans picks I would have had in place of those would have yielded 34.6 points. My Three Stooges Act therefore cost me 21.3 points.

Worse yet every single game went against my teams.

I've been almost too beaten down since Monday to make this week's Fantasy picks.

My late season slide also knocked me down to second or third in several major sub-leagues including Argo Fans where I finished at #2 out of 306 participants and TSN 1050 Toronto where I finished at #2 out of 211 participants. You always seem to have a decent team. What’s the strategy? I always have fun playing, mostly just competing with the wife. It also keeps me current on CFL players around the league. The format has gone a little stale and I believe the reason less players this season. There should be more prizes too. Was there even a grand prize this year? Weekly prizes would be a great enticement to play more. It doesn’t even have to be money. CFL merchandise, tickets, etc, would satisfy me.

You always seem to have a decent team. What’s the strategy?

I start by asking myself which teams "should" do well given their opponents during the week and then I look for the best "values" with that in mind. I typically don't leave much of my salary cap on the table. Having several hundred $ leftover has me wondering what I've done wrong. But I don't try to overthink things as do many of the TSN analysts, e.g. whether a certain strong side receiver can exploit a specific weakness in the opposition's secondary. Come on. It's not nuclear physics. For me it's simply a combination of mild number crunching and educated guesses based on team records and recent play.

There's many a slip twixt cup and lip though!

I always have fun playing.... It also keeps me current on CFL players around the league.

Truth! That's what it's all about. And with only nine teams and four games per week to assess, it's not a particularly time taxing Fantasy game.

The format has gone a little stale and I believe the reason less players this season.

With that in mind I asked Sully to expand the positions to nine by adding an additional WR plus a kicker with a salary cap of $50,000 but he replied that kickers were too predictable and the game requires more of a random element!

Was there even a grand prize this year?

Yes. An all expenses paid trip for two to the 2019 Grey Cup Game.

There should be more prizes too.... Weekly prizes would be a great enticement to play more. It doesn’t even have to be money. CFL merchandise, tickets, etc, would satisfy me.

Oh, I agree!

I still had all six of my players and the Argonauts defence in action which I believed left it quite possible for me to emerge as #1 for the week since the Fantasy participants ahead of me didn't have as many players as I did still in action.

And then late this morning coach Paul LaPolice of the Ottawa RedBlacks decided not to play Kenny Stafford tomorrow against the Alouettes despite Stafford catching three passes for 75 yards against the Argonauts on Wednesday.

So Greg Ellingson and Darvin Adams still seem to have it despite their changes in team. But will Kenny Lawler now pick up where he left off last season?

I've always thought that Fantasy operated as a kind of zero sum game when it came to total player payroll across the system. But now going into Week Two I see huge jumps in the salary of many players, particularly QBs, but I don't see nearly a proportional decrease in the salary of others.

What gives?

:(

It figures that two of my selections (Evans & White) didn't perform well in Week 1, but did well in Week 2 when I didn't select them.

I didn't think they updated salaries until later in the season.

No, there's ongoing adjustments right from the first week as a function of both each player's performance and how popular each player is as a pick at the previous week's price.

But I always find trying to pare my picks of WR's in Fantasy down to three frustrating given that more often than CFL teams play with one set back and five receivers these days. I'm therefore suggesting that Fantasy up the number of WR slots to three so that Fantasy participants would with this suggested change select an eight position lineup:

QB
RB
RB
WR
WR
WR
FLEX
Defence

I'd also then increase the salary cap to $50,000. The changes required in the Fantasy program would be minimal.

You get what you deserve for taking Ti-Cats players. :)

I took (oh no, I'm about to get hit. Better not catch this one) Thomas-Erlington in week 1. Big disappointment.

What's the difference? 40 or 50, everyone plays with the same rules. I like the smaller cap better. Those who find the better bargains deserve to win.

Under what name do you play Fantasy?

:hmmmm:

Fine with me. The key part of my recommendation is adding an additional WR. I only suggested raising the salary cap to forestall the anguished screams I feared would be coming from those who feel unduly constrained under the present $40,000 salary cap for seven positions.

In fact I see so many value options I really want to pick right now that I don't know how I'm even going to spend $40,000 in this upcoming Week 3.

Well I'm up to #35 in the CFL Fantasy standings after just seven weeks so I'm off to a pretty good start. With the increase in the price of many of my go-to picks, I've had to hold my nose and make some truly reprehensible picks this week because that's where the best relative values lie. We'll see how that goes for me.
