While I am a fan of hockey as much as many Canadians, I just can't get excited about this tournament.
It's just a glorified exhibition tournament in my eyes, and a money grab.

The ad hoc, random schedule of these Canada Cup/World Cup tournaments essentially means there is nothing of which to be proud - i.e. saying that your team/country won the World Cup of Hockey doesn't carry any prestige because there is no tradition to the tournament.
Throw in the novelty of Team Europe and Team North America and this tournament loses what little meaning it may have had.

I'll probably watch a number of the games, but I will have no emotional investment in the outcomes.
This just seems like some cheap exhibition tour to me, and it seems to actually degrade high competition hockey imo.

i totally agree with you there...have you seen the face value prices for games? they are absurd...mainly for the games involving Canada....they cost more than the leafs tickets do...

the team north america and europe does dumb down the tournament too...

i am way more interested in the juniors this year and plan to attend a few games (you can usually get very very cheap tickets for the game not involving Canada as well) last year the juniors were here i spent 10-12 bucks a ticket to see the sweedes, finalnd, russia, etc...

No Saturday CFL games are scheduled opposite Canada vs. Czech Republic (Sept 17), a semi-final (Sept 24), and the potential third game of the best of three final (Oct 1). Probably not a coincidence.

Not exited at all. I hope the tourney turns out to be a financial nightmare, because it's intent is nothing but a cash grab. Young guns team, and Team Europe really kills the validity of it being a world cup.

I wasn't planning on paying too much attention to this tournament, but a friend of mine wanted to go so we got a bunch of other friends together and we are going to the 9/19 game between North America and Russia. I'm actually intrigued to see how the young players perform in the tournament, and yes the ticket prices are steep especially when you are forced to buy off stubhub in USD.

There is no tradition to the tournament because they cannot seemingly play it on a regular basis. I think it got more attention when it was called the Canada Cup and it was played every 3-5 years.

I used to like the old Canada Cup but have no use for this tournament. I agree that the Young North Americans team and Team Europe don't exactly add validity to this tournament either. The big tournament these days happens every four years and is called the Olympics with the second biggest one being the annual World Championships. There truly is no need for this World Cup.

Totally agree Ravi, this tournament seems totally irrelevant to me TBH.

This is only the 2nd time this tournament will have been played since the Winter Olympics started to allow professional players in 1998. The NHL might not be sending its players to the next Winter Olympics in South Korea so the timing of this tournament is very interesting. There was also probably a certain mystique to the Canada Cup tournament as it was Canada's opportunity to go up against the "Big Bad Russians" and their "amateur" players.

I have no interest at all. Will not watch. No need for it to even take place.

Hockey season is too long with too many games and too much talk. And I love hockey but give me a break from it.

Season is way too long. Playoffs should never go into June. NBA starts their season 3-4 weeks later, and finishes at the same time, despite also having an 82 game schedule and 4 rounds of playoffs. Something doesn't add up there.

Greed all the way around.

I can tell it is bad when I am more intrigued by who is playing concerts at the tournament than who is playing hockey at the tournament.

(FYI, Green Day and The Killers are headliners for tournament concerts near The Distillery District.)

I attended the North America-Russia game on Monday and it was good hockey. The North Americans didn't advance, but I'm pretty confident in the future of Canadian hockey. Took some of my Indian friends from my MBA and they all enjoyed it.

I haven't paid any attention to the tournament other than checking scores otherwise though.
