Cobain died in early 1994. I would venture to say that grunge was still strong into late 1996.

The hair bands strangely hung around for a bit into 92 and even early 93. "Let's Get Rocked" by Def Lepard hit No. 15 here in the US in summer of 92 I think.
Now you didn't see any crap hair band song make the top 40 like 87-89, but there were a few that still made some noise in 91 and 92.
