They didn't just roll over to an 8-10 team :p

Just goes to prove how highly overrated the west was this year.

The '96 and '97 Argos did what you are supposed to do when you dominate during the regular season: they won the division final and the Grey Cup. As great as the Stamps have been for most of the past three decades, they have repeatedly left their fans disappointed at the end of seasons in which they dominated. By a quick look at all-time standings, Calgary has failed to win the Cup once with a record of 15-2-1, once at 15-3 and twice at 14-4. (Argos did the latter in 1988.)

The Stamps deserve credit for being a consistent contender and getting to the Grey Cup often (altho arguably not as often as they should based on record), but their record in the big game is just 3-4 since 1995. Argos are 4-0 in the Grey Cup in that span, and 5-0 since 1991. It sucks when we fail to make the playoffs or advance to the Grey Cup, but at least when we do, we generally win.

I've noticed the "trend" of the Argos winning the Grey Cup once they're in the game (as was mentioned 5-0 in cups since 1991). On the flip side however, the Argos recent record in east finals games is pretty bad (for a while it seemed like a trip to Montreal and a loss), the 2005, 2007 & 2013 east finals too. feel like it's been a long while since we saw a home east final win too (1997?).

The good Lord do not like to have Argo fans hearts broken. So if the team is not destined to win the Cup ... they don't go to the game. Thus letting a more deserving set of fans have their hearts broken.

Argos have the best winning percentage of any team in the Grey Cup in the last 30 years and might have the best winning percentage in Grey Cup history (well I mean out of the actual CFL teams).

They did to a Reggie Slack QB'd team in the GC what ought to be done to a Reggie Slack QB'd team in the GC.

Edmonton should have done that to a Tom Burgess team in the '90 Grey Cup too. A Bombers team that was taken to the limit by the Argos with John Congemi and Tom Porras at QB the week before.

Perhaps, but that Blue Bomber team had a special defence. They managed to shut the Argos down 5 times that year when the Argos were dropping 50 on everybody else.

True enough. I just can't get over the fact that Tom Burgess won a Grey Cup as a starter.

Edmonton beat Toronto twice that year too so there's no guarantee that the Argos would've fared well had they beaten Winnipeg. I don't think Dunigan was in any position to return in 1990 and I don't know about Foggie.

A lot of good football players on that 1997 team. Mike Vanderjagt, Doug Flutie, Mike Kiselak, Reggie Givens and Johhny Harris were all in the NFL the next year if I remember correctly. DT Rob Waldrop was a great young player who retired too early IMO, could have been a HOFer. The Smith's (Don, Les and Adrion) in the defensive backfield.
Robert Drummond and Pinball in the backfield. Good Canadian talent in O'Shea, Vercheval, Masotti, Cantor, Payne, O'Day, Wiltshire, Dmytryshyn, Gioskos and some excellent back ups.
Sorry about the copying mix up in the previous ones. Had to split it up into two and then it condensed.
