Carter's signing by Jones is a high risk/high reward strategy. If he has matured, a la Messam, he could be an enormous plus to the Riders. However, so far there is no sign of that happening.
Duron Carter is looking forward to a fresh start with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The Riders announced the signing of the 25-year-old receiver on Thursday. He spent two-plus CFL seasons with the Montreal Alouettes before being released Oct. 17.
“It’s new players, new coaches, new area and new everything for me,’’ Carter said Thursday from his home in Boca Raton, Fla. “I never thought of myself ever leaving Montreal until the day I was cut. You never know what is going to happen. I’m really excited to be around Regina and to be around the Regina fans.’’
As per team policy, the duration of Carter’s contract wasn’t released, but he plans to remain with the Riders for a while.
“In my opinion, people should definitely be buying a Carter jersey,’’ he said with a chuckle. “I was cut in Montreal, but I would have told you that about Montreal last year. As of right now I would love to be in Saskatchewan and currently see myself being there as long as possible.’’
The signing of Carter is a risk-reward scenario for the Roughriders. He’s an incredible CFL talent, with 185 catches for 2,877 yards and 17 touchdowns in 40 regular-season games with the Alouettes, but his other side often overshadows his on-field accomplishments.
The Alouettes never explained why Carter was released, other than head coach Jacques Chapdelaine complaining about the lack of effort by some unidentified players after a 22-8 loss to the host Calgary Stampeders on Oct. 16. Carter and fellow receiver Kenny Stafford were cut the next day.
