I too am shocked at his early death. It seems like only a decade ago to me to that he was consistently gaining 1,000+ yards in receptions for the Argos. A sign of my age, no doubt.

Obviously a very sad, sad day in Argoland.

Smith arrived just as Terry Greer had left for the NFL and provided stability at slotback while there was instability at QB. He had one of the best seasons by a receiver in NFL history in 1990 with 20 touchdown receptions.

RIP.

Sounds like he died in his home from cancer.

That is what Rickey Foggie said on Twitter.

Really good performer as an Argonaut, very sad news indeed.

Simply one of the best I have seen over the last 40 years. Two things about Smith I really admired:

1. tough as nails, so many receptions in the middle where you know you are gonna be smacked, and he still
made the catch, took the hit, got back up and played on. He also looked sorta mean, which didn't hurt either.

2. DK really really cared. You could see it on the field.
When he missed a pass or a block or whatever didn't go his way, HE GOT MAD!
and as a fan I LOVE THAT. You could see that winning MATTERED to him, a great competitor.

will never forget the Grey Cup '91 TD catch. Will remember him forever.
Thank you DK for giving all you had. Condolences to his family members. Yes a sad day in Argoland.

This guy was my first favourite Argo! I used to study his route running when I first got into football. I'd watch him lineup and how he'd move and position himself to get the ball. He truly was a star athlete and tough as nails. I also appreciated his competitive spirit. I read that he had a tough transition away from football and am saddened that he has passed on and has died so young.

That is what I had heard as well, but never heard any specifics. He didn't attend the 20-year reunion for the 1991 team.

RIP DK; is there any report on cause of death? - too young.

Smith goes down as an all-time great Argo receiver IMO = up there with Greer, Masotti, Mookie, Mel Profit (true tight end) and Pinball (as a hybrid slot or pass-catching RB)

Rickey Foggie mentioned on Twitter that it was cancer.

I am very sad. One of my all time favs. Have his jersey and I wore it to the games until the later 90's. Exciting player and tremendous competitor. RIP

Steve Simmons wrote a column on Smith's death:

He is the 4th player from that era known to pass away. The others are Harold Hallman, Doran Major and Warren Hudson.
