RIP to the one of the greatest coaches in league history and more directly the coach of the greatest Argo team (and perhaps CFL) of all-time.

Very sad news, always liked Matthews style.
Those were great days when he coached the Argonauts!

Though not always freindly with the media, he had a nack of managing talent and letting them perform at their best.

RIP The Don

Ang, you took the words right out of my mouth.

June 14th officially sucks, it was a yr ago today my Dad passed, and I knew I was in for a glum day.

Then my fav coach of all time passes, F#*K

I really do believe he was the greatest coach of my lifetime as well.

First of all very sorry in regards to your father.
You are correct in regards to Coach Matthews brought credibility and success to any team he was involved with.

I echo everyone else's comments.
For me his last go around will not have a blemish on his career.

There is no question Don Matthews was the greatest coach of all time. When he took over in 1990 I couldn't believe how exciting football could be. Remember the kamikaze offence with the 3 down linemen. Didn't work well but was innovative and had people scramble. I was so sad when he returned in 2008 it did not work out better. I will miss him, RIP Don, the best ever.

So thankful for his work with the Argos in 96 and 97. To me, those are the 2 best teams to have ever existed in football. Sad to hear of his passing and will pray for his family at this time.

One memory stands out. The start of the 98 season and the passing of Norm Casola.
It was kept quiet in the media as he was on injured reserve. When he passed from cancer, after attending the funeral Matthews gave brief media statement.
To me, it came accross just how much he cared for his players, and sad to lose one far to young.
Norm's memory lives on as will The Don's.

Couldn't agree more. As soon as I heard he was gone, my mind flashed back to those two teams. Beyond that accomplishment, his record over three decades as a HC is staggering. Living in Vancouver I had the added pleasure of watching him lead BC to a Grey Cup in 1985 and lose to one to the Argos in 1983. My thoughts are with his family.

Gawd, I remember that 97 Eastern Final (Flutie to Clemons) like it was yesterday. He was a great coach indeed.

Matthews was the best coach ever IMO. Those 1996 and 1997 seasons were magnificent. He also coached the B.C. Lions when they were the kings of the sports scene in Vancouver. It is very sad to hear of his passing.

I put together a playlist of five video news reports from the vaults, showing Don in 1990 before his Argo debut, in 1992 when he was with the Roughriders, two when he was rehired by the Argos in 1996 and one midway through that season. RIP The Don

The Stallions were NOT the best team in CFL history!!! The Argo teams that Don coached were flat out better. It all comes down to Flutie vs. Ham...nuf said
