Taking stock of the Argos through six games

Koshan's summary of our performance (http://www.torontosun.com/2017/07/31/taking-stock-of-the-argos-through-six-games) seems pretty fair. We've done some good things and bad things, as one would expect from a 3-3 team.

Even with a worse record than last year at this point, there is room for optimism.

2-3 plays (each game) away from being 6-0. Also 2-3 plays away, each game being 1-5. I can't complain with 3-3.

This is a fair assessment. Frustrating that we're still taking so many penalties, this seems to have been happening for years.

Still the class of the east. Hamilton is out. So we're down to a three horse race (likely with a crossover).
As long as Ray stays healthy, watch out. Remember this is only year one with this management.

Think back to where we were last season at this time. Even though we were 4-2, there were no players having truly outstanding seasons. While it's far too early to think about post-season awards, and injuries can/will change things, if awards were voted on today we would probably have the East Division's MOP, MODP and MOC candidates in Ray, Butler and Coombs.

Argos have been in the lead at some point in the 4th quarter of every game. They can be 6-0 or they can be 1-5, as both Ottawa victories could have also gone either way. I personally am happy with the product they have provided.

I'm pretty happy with the 3-3 start. Before the season if you said we'd be 3-3 I would have figured we'd be 2nd behind Ott, or possibly 3rd behind Ham as well.
Considering the late arrival of Popp and Trestman I expected a rough start and thought Ray was done.
Would like to see fewer penalties, and more commitment to the run.


All in all I'm excited about the future as it will only get better.
Also if Ray can stay healthy and give us another year or two, I truly think Trestman can groom us the next star QB.

Hard to say. Trestman just might work better with experienced QB's. They sure had issues grooming someone to follow up AC in Montreal. He also had some great success with a journeyman vet in Rich Gannon in the NFL. Could be a comfort level with vets.

I doubt it. He also turned Russell Wilson into an elite QB when he was at NC State. Trestman's just a great coach period. I fully expect him to coach up guys like James Wilder and Johnny Sears -- guys who need some serious one-on-one coaching -- in order to get better things out of them as the season goes on.

If a CFL HC has time for such micromanagement, he isn't doing his real job.

Rookie Wilder has been back-burnered by Trestman and Condell, and vet Sears has almost certainly had a difficult conversation with Chamblin. I don't think Sears will make that mistake again.

I disagree completely. Having a couple of heart-to-heart conversations with a player is not micromanagement. Trestman said from Day 1 his most important job is developing a group of good men. The winning will follow. James Wilder has got an incredible set of tools but he looks indecisive and lacking in confidence. Trestman can help him with that if anyone can.

Timelines still don't add up. There has to be something missing from the story. From what I have been reading, Trestman helped NC State recruit Wilson, but never actually coached him. Wilson was not redshrirted, so 2008 was his first year at NC State. Trestman was in Montreal.

I'm guessing when he was a high school player, he likely attended a football camp, and maybe Trestman was an instructor there.

As I said I enjoy watching them this year and feel we're in good hands moving forward.
Also heard an interview with Coombs I think. Made a comment how in past years a lot of offence plays were designed to get one guy open, so if someone else happened to be open, you weren't getting the ball.
This year it's about the players running the play correctly and who ever is open getting the ball.
Sounded like a little shot at SM & MB offence the last few years. And a vote of confidence for Trestman's.
