Western will be facing what its OC, Steve Snyder, calls "a national powerhouse" in this year's Vanier Cup when it plays Laval's Rouge et Or., who

are the reigning Vanier Cup champions and have won eight titles since 2003.When asked to point out Laval's Achilles heel, Snyder suggested the team didn't have many weaknesses, adding he's been reviewing footage of Laval in action for eight hours a day.
Laval is the last team the Mustangs faced when they made it to the Vanier Cup in 2008. They lost 44-21. ...

Snyder said this isn't so much a rematch, it's an eventuality.
"When you make it this far in our sport, you're most likely going to have to cross paths with Laval at some point."
"They're the best team we will have played this year, but I feel like we match up pretty well against them and our guys are confident that we can move the ball on them and make some things happen."

Rick Zamperin considers this could be the best Vanier Cup ever.

A McMaster vs. Laval title game probably was the number one choice of those planning Saturday’s Canadian university football championship.
Western vs. Laval is the next best thing, and some would argue even better for a variety of reasons. ...

First and foremost, the Mustangs and the Rouge et Or are the two most decorated football programs in USports history.
This will be Western’s all-time high 13th trip to the Vanier Cup. ,,,
The Quebec powerhouse has made 10 previous trips to the big game, and have won nine of those games, losing only in 2011 to McMaster.

Topping the '94 Vanier Cup when Western played Saskatchewan to a 50-40 OT game will be tough.

There have been a number of outstanding Vanier Cup games over the past decade or so (often a better or more entertaining game than the GC of the same season, IMO).

Last year - Laval edging Calgary was a fantastic game; UBC vs. Montreal a couple of seasons back was a great game. Gotta go with that Mac over Laval Vanier of a few years back as the best though - one of the greatest football games i ever saw (Duane Forde said "best ever" too ;o)), but that 94 Western win that AV mentions was an amazing game too.

Too bad more sports fans up here don't get to know or see much of some outstanding CIS football - pathetic lack of interest by the typical wannabe sports media up here; failure of the CIS to promote their game - kinda similar to what the CFL faces on the national sports stage up here - but at least every single CFL game is televised. There should be a CIS game of the week on a national broadcaster, but i guess that's too much to ask for? = sad.

Every year I look forward to watching CIS football playoffs on TV. Every year I am unable to find it on satelitte TV and end up not watching CIS football playoffs. I thought Rogers SportsNet would have televised them? At one time I was able to see all the playoff games on TSN.

The Vanier aired on Sportsnet One and 360 today. Same with the Uteck and Mitchell Bowls last week.

Congrats to Western - a dominant season - and get to pump the powerhouse Laval team in the big game; rather have seen a closer game, but kinda nice to see Laval get pumped after they have been so powerful.

Interesting to see a team win in Canadian football with a powerful run game - they didn't dominate Laval with it like they rolled over other teams - but still over 300 rushing yards in the big game, including nice runs from the QB Merchant to go with 2 very good RBs in Taylor & Joseph.

Also interesting to see a 3-4 D from Western - they have 4 very solid, play-making LBs, and their D was a strong factor.

Match-up of 2 very good CIS QBs in Merchant & Richard - both big QBs with good arms + running ability.. Not likely to get real CFL shots i suppose, but maybe ?

Those are premium service channels unless you have Rogers cable.

R.J. is correct....but all I could find on SportsNet was WHL hockey today. The past 2 weekends there was no University football that I could find....odd.

Dominant performance by Western. Their o-line set the pace for the whole game.
