During the offseason James Wilder said he has 1,000/1,000 rushing and receiving in his sights. However, so have Andrew Harris, who came the closest in CFL history last year and C J Gable. Will Wilder or any of them be the first to do this?

“Obviously, every back in this league would want to be the first guy to make history and have your name on that 1,000-1,000 mark,” Harris said this week. ...

Gable and Wilder, Jr. have both said at various times this offseason they have 1K-1K in their sights. But the math behind the feat is daunting. Consider a few facts:

Prior to Harris and his 1,035/857 totals, the closest to making 1K-1K history was Robert Drummond of the Argonauts when he rushed for 1,134 yards and had 840 yards receiving back in 1997.
A running back would need to average 55.6 yards rushing and receiving over 18 games to hit the 1K-1K mark. Further to that, in a league that is pass heavy there were just 24 100-yard rushing performances by running backs a year ago with Wilder, Jr. and Ottawa’s William Powell (https://www.bluebombers.com/players/william-powell/161719/) posting four each followed by Gable with three and Harris, Sutton and Jerome Messam (https://www.bluebombers.com/players/jerome-messam/143357/) (now of Saskatchewan) eclipsing 100-yards rushing twice each. Only three backs – Harris, Powell and Messam – eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark rushing.
Harris broke the record for receptions by a running back last year with his 105, eclipsing the mark of 102 set by Saskatchewan’s Craig Ellis back in 1985. That year Ellis had 977 receiving yards, but just 569 along the ground.

With Wilder ranked fifth in rushing, few, if any, are paying much attention to his 1,000/1,000 rushing/receiving yardage goal this year. However, James is first in receiving among RBs with 322 yards that rates out at 828 yards over a season, while his 374 yards rushing would project to 962 yards at the current pace over a season, making it unlikely, but not impossible, for him to reach what he said he had in his sights before the season began. A 828 yard receiving season would be just below Robert Drummond's 1997 840 yard season, so breaking that Argo RB record is certainly within sight. Furthermore, Drummond's 1134/840 rushing/receiving season was the closest to ever come to a 1,000/1,000 season until Andrew Harris's 2017 season. Nor is Wilder far off Harris's 1035/857 rushing/receiving 2017 season, the closest anyone has come to achieving this goal.

Considering that Wilder has done this without a Ricky Ray, other than for two games, is remarkable, especially when compared to Harris this year, whose 208 yards receiving projects to only 535 yards over a season, partly because a first string QB in the form of Nichols was not available to throw to him for three games. Nevertheless, Harris is still third among RBs in receiving yards. Second place in receiving among RBs belongs to Tyrell Sutton, whose current 323/273 yards rushing/receiving projects to 830/702 yards for a season. I included Messam, although he is now out of the CFL, in the projection for comparison purposes.

Clearly Wilder, along with Harris and Sutton, who also has suffered from poor QBing, is one of the three best RBs at combining rushing and receiving skills.

Here are the top RBs with their current and projected rushing and receiving season totals. Numbers in () are season projections.
-------------------Rushing--- -Receiving
Andrew Harris 638 (1641) -- 208 (535)

William Powell 504 (1296) --- 159 (409)

CJ Gable 481 (1237) --------- 77 (198)

Don Jackson 442 (1136) ------ 39 (100)

James Wilder 374 (962) ------ 322 (828)

Tyrell Sutton 323 (830) ------ 273 (702)

Jeremiah Johnson 272 (816) - 90 (270)

Tre Mason 251 (645) --------- 78 (201)

Jerome Messam 205 (527) ---- 25 (64)

Mercer Timmis 188 (483) ------ 12 (31)

Excellent input! Interesting that Tyrell Sutton has been quite the receiver.

Argos, please don't sacrifice other receivers touches just to give Wilder a shot at 1000/1000 !!

Drummond would've reached 1,000/1,000 but for his injury that kept him out of the lineup for a few weeks. The Argos put "Pinball" Clemons in against BC who rushed 5 times for 76 yards in a 46-3 Argo romp.

I haven't seen any indication of that at all. In fact, the opposite. He's had games this year in which he has had 3, 5 and 10 carries.
124 total touches in 7 games
Hardly an indication of what you are suggesting, but on par for a feature back.
Andrew Harris: 132 touches in 7 games
William Powell: 123 touches in 7 games

Tyrell Sutton is the only other back to start all 7 games as the #1 back on his team. His touches are lower, but Montreal also never has the ball.

I don't think there is any chance of that happening under Trestman, except perhaps in a meaningless game at the end of the regular season with Wilder very close to the goal, and even under those circumstances I think it is more likely that Trestman would not even play Wilder to avoid the risk of injury and to keep the focus on the Argos winning. as a team.

As Harris approached the 1,000/1,000 mark last year, teams started playing a lot more attention to him, not simply because of the record, because accomplishing this involves so many touches. Teams began having someone spy on him and even roughing him up after the whistle had blown when they thought they could get away with it because the referees had a poor view. In a game against BC, this was pretty obvious on several plays and especially on a play where Micah Awe was punching him at the bottom of a pile after the whistle. It was also obvious that he was still seriously hurting afterward and that he was not very effective from that point onward in the game. In fact, one could see his effectiveness decline in the last few games of the season as the wear and tear of all the hits he had taken over the season increasingly took their toll.
If Wilder does approach the record towards the end of the season, I suspect he will face a similar challenge.
