Did we sign Herdman to a three year contract but Woodson and Onyeka only for two?

Good question.

Yeah, I expected Herdman to be a FA too and am pleasantly surprised that he is not.

These are the 10 of the Free Agent List I would want back for the Argos 2019.

Why Carter? Oh I don't know, SJ is getting old, Armanti is durable - but after DeVier left none of the other WR's could get open - Looking at you Rodney Smith and Myles White.
Marcus Ball, Heart and Soul Argos Player - it was between Bear, Plummer, and Ball - Ball gets the nod.

Posey is listed as a pending free agent in BC. I would take him over Carter in a heart beat.

Maybe it's just the gloom associated with a 4-14 season, but I don't see any guys on that list that we *need* back. It would make more sense to re-sign Holmes and Bomben than try to replace them, and you could probably say the same thing for some of the DBs, but I'd be happy to learn a lot of new names next year.

mchesher03

Same – although I like a lot of these guys, the cruel reality is that we are coming off a 4 win season. Changes should be and will be made, such is life in professional football. Buckle up.

To me, Darby, Gabriel, Holmes and Bomben are priorities on that list. I would also add Jeff Knox jr. IMO came into a bad situation late in the year, but has plenty to offer. I don’t expect Wynn to be back, but would like to have him.

I think it is time to upgrade Holmes position ...hopefully through the draft.

I don't think he was bad at all. Slow start to the season for him, but I watched him a lot, and he had a really good 2nd half of the season.

The OL played well in stretches this year -- it seemed like the pass protection was better for MBT than Franklin, but James held onto the ball sometimes a little too long so it wasn't always on the OL. It's about finding consistency over an 18 game season and finding CVZ's replacement.

I think CVZ has at least 2 more good years left in him. That will buy them time to find that replacement, if in fact they don't already have it in Campbell.

Could go there with the 1st overall pick; like Sam Thomassin - massive, CIS all-star guard from the Laval hogs factory that has produced a bunch of CFL O-linemen. Darius Ciraco just had a nice season as a Ticat starting guard as a rookie draft pick from game one on in - no need for years of "seasoning".

If Campbell is able to contribute, etc. then I can't foresee any way that he doesn’t get the opportunity to do so. If nothing else, Campbell has a great story with transitioning to football through Argonauts high school football programs and also seems to be a real advocate for the city. Would be a great story to keep pumping out there of a Toronto kid being a key contributor to the Boatmen.

I'd love Campbell to emerge as a starter, but he has been on the roster for three years now. He's (far) ahead of Sackey, who seems unlikely to ever become a player, but I haven't seen any evidence that he's closing in on starting capability. He did not dress for every game this past season and ended up sitting behind J'Michael Deane, who was brought back late in the season even though he is at best a backup.

To be clear, I really hope Argos re-sign both Campbell and Kolankowski, and I will continue to pull for both of them to develop into starters until it's obvious there is no hope, but I would not count on Campbell as CVZ's replacement at this point.

I'd like to see Carter back and see what he can do in a non Trestman/Milanovich style offense. Carter IMO would do great with a Franklin who'll now get more of an offense to fit his strengths and not vice versa.

mchesher03

forgot to post this but really glad they re-signed Jake. Feel like long snapping hasn't been an issue at all over the past few years, giving us a chance to focus on other deficiencies ;) good to hear Jake will be back.

The Argos don't make a strong impression in the CFL.ca top 30 FA list (https://www.cfl.ca/2019/01/22/cfl-cas-top-30-pending-free-agents-3/). Now that a few useful NATs have been re-signed, I'd say that the team can only get better.

paulwoods13
01-22-2019, 09:52 PM
Kolankowski and Woodson have re-signed. Both are important pieces of the puzzle IMO. Kolankowski is our only true backup centre, and IMO has some potential to develop into a starting guard. Woodson has definite potential to start at CB, maybe at safety.

Good to see Kolankowski and Woodson are both signed through 2020, not just this year.

One of my favorites, Bear Woods is back. I figured there was a decent chance they would move on, but Chamblin & Popp have obviously enjoyed success with Bear. I hope they back themselves up nonetheless but I am hoping for a healthy season from Bear. The Linebacker unit is a good one, but was definitely hurt by injuries last year. We'll see what becomes of Terrence Plumber, Marcus Ball and Greg Knox Jr. Justin Tuggle is another name to consider. He provides the team with solid versatility but may be another that may not be coming back.

Kind of surprised about the re-signing of Bear Woods. I really like the guy but thought his injuries and age would prevent him from getting signed this year. However, no harm in bringing him to camp to see if he's still got it. I'd do the same with Marcus Ball.

I was thinking the same thing. Popp I think is at times overly loyal to his signings who have done well in the past. If that is the case, he certainly wouldn't be the first one.

Alex Charette is back through 2020. Speed, and he has developed into the Teams player they imagined he could be.

Bear Woods had an injury-prone season in 2018 so he wouldn't really fit into this category, but it is kind of hard to make heads or tales of some of the personnel on defence. They were very good under Chamblin in 2017 and regressed under Archer in 2018. I wonder if the challenge to us arm-chair GM's (maybe not to those actually making the decision) is whether or not the regression was legitimate regression on the part of the players or simply the coaching. I'm willing to bet for the latter because it wasn't as if it was 2-3 guys who might regress (through attrition). It was the whole unit.

Woods played at a high level under Chamblin in 2017. Yes, he's two years older now and was injured for much of 2018, but I'm willing to see if Chamblin can't get him back to that high level.

What I saw in 2018 was an often confused defence with poor tackling, zero confidence and a lot of confusion which falls squarely on Archer.

This unit if all re-signed have the potential to be pretty good IMO. Same as the back field. The defensive line needs the upgrade and then everything will fall in place. They don't need a lot of rookies learning the game to start the season anyway. They can be worked into the lineup later in the season when injuries occur etc. With the short pre season and everything you need experienced players to start the season with IMO.
