Wonderful tribute on the 25th anniversary of John Candy’s death. Perhaps John was the last owner who truly loved the team. He worked tirelessly to promote the team and the league. How would the team have faired if he’d lived a good, long life and maintained his ownership?

I heard that he grew up playing high school football in Pickering and his Argos aspirations were cut short by a knee injury. He had to settle for just being a beloved Hollywood movie star.

A great and loving man, along with being a huge Argo/CFL fan. He was greatly missed.

Candy went to and played for Neil McNeil High School in Toronto.

Great comedienne, whose films still resonate today. Loved his time as the Argos owner, and CFL Ambassador.

This should be required viewing for every Argo fan today.

What I appreciated a great deal was that Mr. Candy never was shy or embarrassed to be an Argos fan. He wore his passion on his sleeve and did so proudly.

If you haven't seen this before, enjoy.

Thanks for the link, Mike.

John Candy - an all-time great comic actor, and a proud Argo fan who got to become Argo (part) owner. Fantastic life lived; gone too early.

This is a great video as well:

This is from the 1991 Eastern Final posted by Paul and shows Candy interacting with players, an interview with Scott Oake and a Gatorade shower from Carl Brazley.

LOL at Wittman and Galat speculating about bonuses.

Extremely likeable guy who never forgot his roots, as Mike Hogan said he loved the Argonauts and was damn proud of it.
I remember the sad feeling when his death was announced, hard to believe 25 years have passed.

Anyone still have their Argo Christmas card that season ticket holders got back in that time signed by John? It's something I cherish to this day.

It's hard to believe that it has been 25 years since we lost Uncle Buck. Greatly missed.

Hoagie hit the nail on the head here "Mr. Candy never was shy or embarrassed to be an Argos fan. He wore his passion on his sleeve and did so proudly." not everyone (myself included) could make this claim.

John Candy was my favourite comedian before he became an Argo owner because he never made fun of others but showed everyone the foibles that in one form or another we all possess. His passion for the Argos was that of a hardcore fan who had dreamed of playing for the team.
