View Full Version : Should the Argos Pursue Potential Free Agent Jake Maier

Jake Maier, who became the first CFL QB to throw for 300 yards in each of his first three games, is on the free agent's list. The Stampeders already have Bo on one of the league's most expensive contracts, so keeping both of them will be difficult. Should the Argos pursue him if he is available at free agency or even trade for his rights as they did last year with Arbuckle?

Maier returning to Calgary.

So does that put Bo in play? If it does, count me as not interested at any higher a price than we'd have to pay MBT.

I would have zero interest in Bo, especially at anywhere close to his current salary.

If you can get Bo for 400k, I would be all over it. I just think he had an off year. If not, stick with MBT.

Is Bo healthy?
He looked awful at times last season.

He did, but there was something not right with the whole team. I would take a chance on him at the right price.

He missed seven games in 2021 and another seven in 2019 when he had tons of time to recover because of the cancelled 2020 season. I think there is a big question mark about his having a healthy future.

Yep, me too. For $400,000 it'd be worth the risk. But for 600+ (or whatever he is currently pulling in), then no way.

I'd be OK to go with MBT as the starter, but we need to bring someone legit in to compete with him.

I believe Michael O'Connor will be a free agent as well; oh wait - never mind. ;o)

I also would like to see O’Connor back in Toronto, although having Cole M’Donald in the fold may make that unnecessary.😀

He restructured his contract to be around 500k. He’s reportedly owed a 100k bonus in January, so that will tell us where his future lies. If he’s a free agent, then I wouldn’t be surprised if the market puts him in the 400k range. QB money is starting to come down. To suggest he wouldn’t be a worthy upgrade over MBT, even at that price increase, is crazy. He’s a great QB that had legit NFL offers.

His health being his only question mark to me. If the Argos do somehow have the oppportunity to sign him, I would hope they also bring back MBT who has proven to be not only very capable but also durable. He’s taken a lot of hits in the pocket and never missed a snap due to injury.

This is all just fun with numbers until Bo actually becomes available (which I doubt will happen), but IMO there is no chance we could have a QB of MBT's calibre on the roster as well as Bo. Even if he takes a steep decrease in his salary, Bo will command too much of the salary cap to allow for anything other than an inexperienced, inexpensive backup, as has been the case in Calgary ever since Bo became the starter. I'd far rather have two experienced, capable QBs at medium salaries (the Hamilton model from 2021) than one high-priced guy and nothing certain behind him.
