may as well pack it in then, boys.

5. Toronto Argonauts2023 Early Ranking: 4th
2023 Record: 16-2, lost Eastern Final
First Up 2024: Vs. BC, June 9Off-season notable: To be clear, it was us of little faith this time a year ago, questioning if Chad Kelly (https://www.cfl.ca/players/chad-kelly/161801/) was ready to assume starting duties. He responded with an MOP-winning season and led the Argos to 16 wins. Ka’Deem Carey will get the chance to provide punch in the run game, replacing Ouellette, while GM Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons ensured that Kelly will have ample protection in front of him and receiver options around him. The challenge for this group may come on the defensive end, where rivals pried a number of key pieces away. One player we’re excited to see come Week 1: Deontae McMahon, who piqued the organization’s interest with his return ability shortly after signing with them last year.

start planning the parade!

1) Toronto Argonauts (2)

The Argos have dealt with the exodus that so many elite teams experience after success, with all-stars like A.J. Ouellette, Adarius Pickett, Jamal Peters, Javon Leake, and Boris Bede headed elsewhere and Most Outstanding Rookie Qwan’tez Stiggers expected to be selected in the 2024 NFL Draft (https://3downnation.com/2024/02/02/argos-db-qwantez-stiggers-a-consensus-winner-from-east-west-shrine-bowl-week/). That doesn’t seem to faze our voters so long as Most Outstanding Player Chad Kelly remains under centre, with Toronto’s absurd depth more than ready to be put to the test. Though Pinball Clemons has focused more on bottom-of-the-roster Canadian additions in free agency, the acquisitions of Jake Ceresna, Tunde Adeleke (https://3downnation.com/2024/02/13/toronto-argonauts-sign-versatile-canadian-db-tunde-adeleke/) and Ka’Deem Carey (https://3downnation.com/2024/02/14/toronto-argonauts-sign-one-time-cfl-all-star-rb-kadeem-carey/) should help plug some of the biggest holes.

I just wait for Mike Mitchell's weekly picks to realize the Argos are doomed. He's writes all the Argo related articles on CFL Newshub, but seems to pick against them every week. Now he is an American who also covers the spring leagues down there, so take it with a grain of salt how much he really knows about the league.

Off season power rankings are the dumbest thing.
Argos lost some key players but have done a great job in replacing them IMO, not overly concerned TBH.
It seems that a lot of people love to speculate on the Argos “demise”, that’s why they play the games folks.

Perhaps Paul Woods can corroborate this but anytime you see an article penned by an unnamed staff member means that no one was willing to put their name behind these predictions. That is all you need to know about this article.

I have no direct knowledge of how either cfl.ca or 3DN works, but what you are suggesting is not the way it works for most traditional news publications, in my experience. There can be many reasons for a lack of byline, including the short length of a story. In some cases I'm aware of, reporters have withdrawn their byline if they did not like the way a story was edited, but that's quite rare. Basically each org set its own policy on what warrants a byline and what doesn't. Nowadays, most stories in traditional news outlets carry bylines, even if the story is very short.

My guess with these two "power rankings" is that the reason there's no byline is they are collaborative efforts involving more than one contributor. I really, really doubt they would be unbylined because the author doesn't actually stand behind the work.

If a reputable organization publishes something, that in effect means that the organization itself stands behind the work. Why would an org publish something if it didn't?

Argos over Alouettes all day long. Maccoica and Maas have done a good job rebuilding and won the cup but I don’t think they’re realistically close to repeating as East Champions on paper.

Oh, I dunno: I expect the Als to build and be stronger off their GC season. I had little faith in Jason Maas to be good HC hire there, but gotta give him and his coaching staff a ton of credit for putting together that strong play-off run.

IMO - at this early stage - I'd expect a dog fight between the Argos & Als for tops in the East; with the Pussycats & RedBlacks far behind and battling for the East basement.

The funniest part of CFL.ca's power rankings is Saskatchewan at #4. Argos won more games last year than they won in the previous 2 season's combined. Sure on paper they look to have improved, but a team that has struggled the way they have in back to back years, really should be ranked near the bottom and prove they are better when the games start to count.

LOL! I had actually assumed when I first saw the title of this thread that it was about the Chad Kelly situation.
