I think by releasing a player, it allows him to take longer to find a team to sign with. It no longer has to be during that negotiating window. He may have a team that likes him, but can't offer him a signing bonus until a time after the window. Elks did the same with Jake Julien today.
Possible, but if that is the intention, wouldn't it make more sense to do the release closer to the end of the signing window? Why do it in mid-Jan when they have until sometime in Feb to sign with any team?
Now I am starting to think the release happens when a player agrees to a contract. Maybe the player needs to be released from his CFL contract before he can actually sign an NFL contract.

Totally makes sense.

I see Daniels has agreed to a restructured contract (less money). He is 32 and his performance last year was a little disappointing. I thought he might be on the bubble this year but reducing his salary might help his cause.

ARGOS EXTEND CANADIAN OL JOHN BOSSE & SIGN AMERICAN DL DESHAWN MCCARTHY

TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts Football Club announced today they have extended Canadian OL John Bosse and signed American DL Deshawn McCarthy. The team also announced the release of American LB Jon Jones.

Bosse (6'4"/335lbs) was selected by the Argos in the third round (25th overall) in the 2024 CFL Draft and played two games in his rookie year with the Argos. The University of Calgary alum made his CFL debut on September 7 vs Ottawa. He was a member of the 2019 Vanier Cup champions.

McCarthy (6'4"/265lbs) attended East Stroudsburg State (2019-2023) where he played in 43 games and tallied 138 tackles, 51 for loss, 31 sacks, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and 14 knockdowns. The Philadelphia native was a First Team All-American in 2021 after a 13-sack campaign.

Bosse didn't look out of place in the finale in Edmonton in 2024. I am curious to see his continued development.

Jonathan Jones seemed to be overtaken on the roster as the 2024 season progressed. He was getting NFL workouts a year ago at this time.

I'm guessing mgmt is not expecting Darkangelo to get any NFL offers.

IF McManis is retained, hard to see Darkangelo making the roster over Judge or Varga, and with Sopik and a pile of other young Canadian LB talent around. Even if McManis leaves - Varga could play MLB with Judge at W-OLB.

And again, IF McManis is still on the D, it's hard to fathom going out and giving up assets to stock pile talent at basically the same position - Judge, Varga and Sopik are all experienced starters; and why bother to go out and get that Junior ball star Smith from the Riders PR ?

Argos often dressed Jones (in 22 and 23) even when he wasn't starting. I could easily envisage a scenario where Darkangelo doesn't start but does dress, for specials and as a rotation player on defence.

To the best of my knowledge Sopik is a FA. The trade for Varga tells me he won't be back.

Based on CFL.ca transactions, it looks like Dejon Brissett restructured.
