Re: GOB (Good 'Ole Boys) Discussion Thread
If you have nine or 10 NATs capable of starting, you should start nine or 10 NATs. If you have only seven, you should start only seven. Argos have been fortunate, through good drafting and asset management, to have enough talent to start more than seven the past four years, and to regularly play as many as 11 or 12 on offence and defence. I have a feeling they won't be at that level of NAT talent this year, but we'll see. One thing I would not do is start a NAT at a position he's not well suited for. I think both Varga and Judge are capable of playing WIL, but I'm not sure either guy is a SAM, so one would have to back up the other and come in situationally. Perhaps we'll see more 3-4 alignments, given all the losses on the defensive line, but without knowing who the DC is, it's hard to predict such a thing. Obviously this response has little to do with the original subject of the thread, but it seemed to fit here.

Agreed - if the team feels there are only 7 Canadians capable of starting then that's what they have to work with. They shouldn't be handing playing time or starter jobs to weak, not suitable Canadian players, just to wave the flag or something. And conversely, as an add on - if the team has only 13 or 14 import players capable of starting, then perhaps they should let Canadian talent compete at some of those positions instead of automatically, pencilled-in thinking, handing 17 starter positions to Americans just because that's how CFL brain-trusts like to work and proceed. And this is addressed by recruiting, FA signing, drafting Canadian talent at ALL positions, not just 7 or 8.paulwoods13 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 12:15 pm If you have nine or 10 NATs capable of starting, you should start nine or 10 NATs. When I read the article my take is that Faulds is referring to CFL HC, GM & Front Office staff not changing or being filled with Americans. I'm noticing more & more Canadians filling these roles so I am not sure that I agree with him. Maybe if he started out as a QB Coach, he could work his way up into an Offensive Co Ordinator.

I would love to see a comprehensive list of all coaching staffs over the past five years. I, too, feel there has been a lot of new blood, including from other levels of Cdn football, coming into the league. Faulds's comments may reflect his perception, but I'm not sure it's accurate.gilthethrill wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 1:54 pm When I read the article my take is that Faulds is referring to CFL HC, GM & Front Office staff not changing or being filled with Americans. The changing of the hashmarks has really eliminated this. Canadians would most likely be put at Z, always on the wide side and if the ball was placed on the wide hash then they would become a decoy. I remember Argos having Spencer Watt at Z.

Does a strong resume in U sports turn into a CFL career? Has anyone reached out or tried to interview Faulds for a job? I would imagine he might be referring to this.paulwoods13 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 2:34 pmI would love to see a comprehensive list of all coaching staffs over the past five years. if you mean Ife Onyemenam, he was just released by the club.OV Argo wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 12:05 pm Did add Judge & Varga (only one will be a real starter quite likely though); maybe Hergott and Ife Onyeka from last year's draft get a real shot to play DE reps; maybe Blackburn or a draft pick get a real chance to compete for the starting safety job; and maybe they draft well at other positions of need (like DT or RB) to make the roster and contribute. Also still time/chance to make a trade (draft time) to add more Canadian talent. We shall see.

Dunk's story says: "Despite interest from Canadian Football League franchises, the 41-year-old plans to stay in U Sports long term." No attribution for the statement; the likelihood is that Faulds himself claimed to have received interest. Without independent corroboration, no way of knowing if that's true.ArgoGabe22 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 5:40 pm

Nope; i meant last year's 5th rounder Ifenna Onyeka - the DE from Carleton who was a 2nd team all-Canadian DE last season.paulwoods13 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 5:41 pmif you mean Ife Onyemenam, he was just released by the club.OV Argo wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 12:05 pm Did add Judge & Varga (only one will be a real starter quite likely though); maybe Hergott and Ife Onyeka from last year's draft get a real shot to play DE reps; maybe Blackburn or a draft pick get a real chance to compete for the starting safety job; and maybe they draft well at other positions of need (like DT or RB) to make the roster and contribute. If I had to guess, some CFL team might have offered Faulds an offensive asst. or RB coach kinda gig. Doubt that would pay near what he gets from Laurier, plus a fraction of the football decision making input. Lots of ex-CFL players with American passports hold quite the number of CFL position coach jobs. Don't see very many successful and very experienced in Canadian football coaches from U Sports backgrounds getting CFL gigs; nor many new NCAA successful coaches getting CFL jobs. A lot of recycling of same olds.paulwoods13 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 5:45 pmDunk's story says: "Despite interest from Canadian Football League franchises, the 41-year-old plans to stay in U Sports long term."
