Arbuckle is an almost ideal QB2 for us. He ticks every box except being a short yardage specialist.
His familiarity with our team/coaches/setup is worth a pay raise and the possibility (or likelihood) of him playing significant game time due to a recovering QB1 means he likely also gets bonuses on playing time, performance and games started.
Like previously mentioned, if someone wants to give him a bigger deal than we are able to I don't think anyone hereabouts would begrudge him taking it. But with the number of guys playing this year's version of Musical QB Chairs, I think that when the music stops, he'll sit in a Double Blue chair.
Also, Coach Din likes him.
As for the multi-season problem at short yardage, I really hope this gets fixed this off season. I'd guess that other Argofans members are on the borderline of getting stress ulcers at every 2nd or 3rd &1 like me.
Short yardage is so vital in 3 down ball and it looks like we've ignored the current trend of having a battering ram available for these calls.

Adeboboye, Cassar, Mital or Calver could all do it, IMO. No need for it to be a QB. Ham and BC have shown it works just fine with a big non-QB.

The Laval offence was doing the big H-back at QB on goal-line situations thing with current Als player David Dallaire, well before the Ticats tried it this season with M-Litre; they would also give Dallaire the option to throw.

It makes no sense to have a guy with virtually no ball handling experience like Jack Cassar take on the SY offence. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
The reason you want a QB handling the SY offence is that you want the option to throw a surprise pass. Chad did it at least twice in 2022 and they were both big plays IIRC.

How often does any team actually throw off short yardage? I don't think it's been done by the Argos in two seasons, and one of the plays in 2022 was a complete bust by Mtl's defence.
If fixing short yardage is a priority (and who would argue?), then the objective should be to find someone who can reliably gain a yard by taking the snap and pushing forward. Hamilton did it successfully with Litre this year, and IIRC BC has had Mackie do it. There's no reason a non-QB -- a regular ball-handler like Adeboboye or Mital, or someone else -- can't be taught how to do it. If we recruit a third-string development QB who can handle that responsibility (as Fajardo did in 2017), great. But I have no interest in allocating one of the three QB spots to a guy who is there only for short yardage.

Well of course it was a bust, they were shocked as hell by the pass, that’s the whole point of a surprise play. You might only try it two or three times in a season, but if it can turn just one potential loss into a win it will have been worth it IMO.

The only one I can remember (in the 2022 Eastern Final) was, IIRC, not a planned surprise play but rather an opportunity seized by two alert players. IMO teams typically try very few pass plays out of short yardage; Argos appear to have tried it twice in the past three seasons, even with Kelly at QB much of that time. But there will be multiple short-yardage opportunities throughout a season, sometimes even in a single game. Converting first downs on the majority of those has greater potential to lead to victories IMO. Being able to do both effectively would be ideal, but that's a lot of pressure to put on a QB3, which is who I'd prefer handling such situations.
