Pinball moving up to president makes a certain amount of sense, but if that were to happen, who -- if anyone -- comes in below him? We've already lost (and not replaced, as far as I can tell) two key members of the front office this year. Is Pelley going to want to increase salary costs for the Argos -- which presumably would happen if there are two team presidents replacing one -- or will he be inclined to cheap it out? While I'm not sorry to see Manning depart (other than on a personal/human level; he's a good person), I'm not counting on this move being the harbinger of bigger and better things for MLSE's fourth-most important franchise.
I hope that Pelley as a past President of the Argos can see the value in hiring a full time President. The budget to operate the Argos is less than what they pay Auston Matthews. And if spent wisely can breakeven and with success generate a small profit. Either run it properly or sell it to someone else. Pinball is the right man because he will commit to the job with no half measures.

They do need to figure out player ops because they have not replaced those key departures. The depth the Argos have been blessed with these last 3 years is dwindling and not being replaced. Good CDN & US scouting is vital.

If Pelley can get a separate president for each team, he will have won me over. I know he talks a big game, but to me, he smells kind of phony, and not in a Seinfeld good type of a way.
I completely agree with this assessment. Argos need their own president and I hope they conduct a thorough search for one.

The overall budget is not less than what the pay Auston Matthews, and MLSE probably makes more on sales of Matthews jerseys than they do on all combined Argos revenues. You should never compare the operations of these teams. You can’t win that argument.

While that is not precisely true, your basic point is accurate. But therein lies the problem. The Argos are a fly speck on MLSE's financial statements, and not worth much of Pelley's time. He has said he's going to drill down on the two clubs over the next month, which makes sense since Leafs and Raptors are in vacation mode. But after that, the CEO won't be devoting much time to these junior franchises, especially the one that has not seen its enterprise value increase in decades. Even if the Argos could make a small operating profit, it would amount to a rounding error on the books of MLSE.

CFL player salary cap is $5.525 Million. Auston Matthews contract pays him $13.25 Million. I don't think I am off the mark when I say the Argos budget is what Mlse pays Matthews. It's close.
Regardless the point is it is a speck for MLSE, and the organization doesn't want to bother with football very much for the above reason. That's why it always made sense for them to install a President they can trust (Pinball) who will do a great job, give him his $15 Million budget and let him run with it. Check in 4 times a year.
The way they have done it has accomplished nothing from the side. The player ops responsibilities Pinball has had, he's knocked out of the park developing the best depth in the league and a perennial contender. He would do the same thing given time with the city and boardroom of Toronto.
My hidden fear is that the powers that be, know all of this, and they don't want the Argos to have that kind of success for some conspiratorial reason.

Player salaries make up about 1/3 of overall expenses on a CFL team. Operating budget is closer to 20M per team. You need to factor in front and back office personnel, travel and hotel expenses, rent and I’m sure much more that I can’t think of off the top of my head.

Also, that may be the player cap, but I’m sure teams are paying a lot more than that for salaries. There’s a reason teams all seem to have 10 players on the 6 game injured list. Cap relief. To me, the league should just increase the cap to 8M and give no cap relief for 6 game inhured list players, but that’s another story

I'm sure the Argos are on the lower than average side because their business ops do not seem very robust, but whether its $13M or $20M its a rounding error for MLSE. The point is establish a President, allocate the budget, and let them run. So basic, you have to question why it has not been done to this point. And of course there is no media to question it, or real media.
