In what way were Nield and MacKellar key players last year? Nield is someone I like, but his drops to catch ratio last year was not good. I know he's a better player than he showed, but I'm not surprised he was cut. He was the 4th Canadian receiver on the depth chart. MacKellar was just awful last year. No other way to put it. Lost his job to a rookie 8th round pick. I'm just surprised he wasn't cut earlier,OV Argo wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 7:08 pm Mackellar to the EE now too ?
Don't get cutting Nield - was he owed a bonus soon or something ?
Not liking the overall tenor of this Argo off-season personnel goings on.
Fine to say the staff will find or draft new talent; quite possible, but I'd rather have that supplemented by retaining more key players and/or signing some a couple of quality known FAs .

The Argos have been a dominant team the last 3 years in part because they had the best O-Line and best D-Line in the league. They controlled the line of scrimmage.
The O-Line is intact. Offence will be strong.
The D-Line is gone. Orimolade, Ceresna, Smith, Brinkman. These are all stars - each of them.
The Argos have done a wonderful job recruiting and finding talent. I am curious to see how they replace an entire unit. This will be their finest hour if they can pull it off.

I agree that it is a bit strange that these players are leaving - for Edmonton no less. I can only guess that they're getting significantly more money and the cost of living in Edmonton is significantly less than in the GTA. Still surprising to see the likes of local players like Smith and Metchie leaving though.ARGO57 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 7:24 pmI’m not panicked over what has transpired in the last 24 hours or so but it does raise some questions though.OV Argo wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 7:08 pm Mackellar to the EE now too ?

The Argonauts have had a lot of success in the last 3 seasons and as an organization seem to treat their players very well.
Despite all of this you wonder how the player exodus comes to pass, is it strictly financial or is there something behind the scenes that the fans aren’t seeing?
Interesting that 3 starters on the D-Line for the reigning Grey Cup Champions all decide to leave the organization within hours of each other to join the same team (Edmonton) who have been a mitigated disaster the last couple of seasons and scored extremely poorly on the recent players organizational scorecard.
A real head scratcher TBH?

I didn't say that either of those guys was a key player to retain; I was talking more about guys like Robbie, Metchie, Ceresna.AngeloV wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 7:56 pmIn what way were Nield and MacKellar key players last year? MacKellar lost his job and deservedly so IMO; lots of other O-line depth to evaluate plus maybe another draft pick. We'll see what he ends up doing in EE land; like another former Argo O-line / top draft pick in Richards
Nield is vastly under-rated by many IMO - big target, decent speed, large catch radius; won't be at all surprised though if he does not catch on elsewhere in the league, even as good ole "depth". Drops to catch ratio eh? - love to see an accurate CFL stat for that (though it would have to be some sort of clear drop definition used) - a lot of CFL fans would be shocked to find certain resume guys they have been told are stars, are league leaders in that department - like Tim White - just brutal last season. We'll see if Mital graduates to way more playing time & targets. Receiver is a 5 man starter position group. I'd use the 3rd pick this draft to get another prospect there.

Not surprised about Nield. I thought he might break out in '24 but he regressed.

Not that surprised about Nield even though I think that he can be a solid contributor for another team. It is a situation where he is entering his fifth year in the league but hasn't fully established himself yet. The Argos are looking to go younger among the Canadian backups, me thinks.
As for the rest of the roster, I have some trepidation that the team ownership has decided to go cheap on the roster to save money on overall team operations. I hope that this is not the case and we will see some big signings in the coming days.

Farhan Lalji reported said the Elks were paying Ceresna and Smith in excess of $500,000 for the two of them. With all the other high profile players they have enticed to sign with the team, it raises the question of how they will stay within the cap. Or maybe the new ownership doesn't care.

If those numbers are in fact accurate, then Hervey overpaid (yet again). I have no doubt that the Argos offered both players very, very good offers. I don't blame them for letting them walk.

Seems like every desperate GM has a strategy to over pay the top players from Toronto vs finding diamonds in the rough.
