The $200k owing to Kelly for six games still gets paid to Kelly, but doesn't get charged against the cap. That means the team has the ability to spend an extra $200k without it being charged against the cap, but doing so would mean spending $400k in real dollars. If money is tight, who's to say MLSE would approve such an unbudgeted expenditure?
They must have thought Kelly would be good to go sooner. He must be having unexpected setbacks in his recovery. I just hope he doesn't lose another half season or more.
Has anyone heard why Kelly was DNP yesterday? Did he suffer a setback? This should be treated as big news when an MOP candidate isn't even practicing.
Unfortunately, the Argos are tight lipped on this sort of thing, and there is no real media coverage of the team.

paulwoods13 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 26, 2025 11:05 am Going on the six-game means you can't even practise until after four games have been played. They presumably felt he was capable of practising and would benefit from doing so. If he does end up missing the first six games, the decision to one-game him will bear scrutiny. However, we also need to ask whether the org would be willing to spend one-third of his salary on other parts of the team, while also paying him. That's an extra $200k that theoretically would be available, but is the org looking to spend above the cap the way they so clearly were in 2023? I'm dubious. Wouldn't surprise me if Pelley has tightened spending on all of MLSE's teams.
MLSE is definitely in saving mode. No more Presidents (Ujiri will be next). But on the player side they still spend to their respective caps. And the $200,000 they could have saved on Kelly is such loose change to them, but very real money to the football team thay it could have kept some D-Line, or Amos, or Metchie, etc...
They loose to Ottawa, he is starting vs. Hamilton at home. So this is all speculation and with the benefit of hindsight. Given the serious injury and most in the winter did not expect him to be ready for the early part of the season, and the free agent challenges they were having again on the defence they could have gambled that $200K, and spread it around. To lose your entire D Line (the best one in the league) was not going to be easy to recover from early on.
Right on cue....Ujiri is gone.

3 Down just reported Kelly is out until week 7.

I figured he would miss the next 2 weeks when he was limited and DNP this week. Let's hope they aren't 0-5 upon his return.

What makes more sense, start him in Mtl after a bye week (when presumably players will be away from the facility for six or seven days before prepping for the next game) or at home against Wpg after a long week (games July 17 and 26)? I would not be surprised if he sits for six before being activated. Or even more, given the way this injury seems to be slow to fully heal.

Yet Shapiro is still on board. Much as we all like Pelley, it's pretty tough to have any faith that the teams in MLSE's stable aren't going to be run badly under Rogers.

Except for the Argos because they are left alone on their island. As long as Pinball and Company are in place they can continue to build a model CFL franchise.

These divisional games are important. I expect Hamilton to beat Montreal tonight as they are missing offensive weapons. I do think Arbuckle can beat Dusty Crum on Sunday night. That TiCat game Friday vs Toronto will be interesting. They had their way with the Argos last year. If Toronto loses that one and Kelly can play they need to get him out there against Montreal.

If you truly believe that, you are way more of an optimist than I am. I can't believe Pelley would look at drawing 12k against the CFL's biggest travelling fanbase and think, "we are building a model CFL franchise."

Not to whip a dead-horse or anything, but, and since I don't live in the area to see - what big marketing efforts are the Argos and their "owners" making to promote / sell the team? A Facebook post once a week or so ?
