For tonight, most agree I think if a player has signed an NFL FA contract or was drafted, no point even picking them except very late. Because you are at least 2 years from seeing them if ever. But that means there is a ton of depth with CIS and other players in NCAA. Really the first 4, 5, 6 rounds are full of legitimate players.

The CFL draft is tricky enough as it is, but it should come after NFL even if it means coming to training camp a little a week later.
It's more likely this league will move the draft to late March going forward.

Very solid drafting by the Argos IMO; particularly in getting the 2 top RBs in this draft class, but also a couple of DBs in an area of need and a couple of receivers in another area of need.

The one thing they didn't get out of this draft was a defensive lineman. Hopefully, they get a lot out of Ojo, Shand, and Kongbo this year.

Yep, and one of the top rated DTs in a real thin group this year - A. Notice - was available into the 7th round; coulda grabbed him instead of 2 DBs and yet another interior LB type in McKenzie

And the rushing stats on Mombo for last season cited above are incorrect. He had good production and a stellar yds/carry average with Windsor last season.

Some real promising picks tonight. I’m so glad we didn’t waste any picks on those big name futures who signed NFL. We’ve done enough of that in recent drafts. The future is now baby.

The only head scratcher was Ethan “Elton” John at #16 when there were other more acclaimed DBs available. But it’s pretty clear that Pinball and Jimmy B were looking for two things in this draft: above-average athletes and high-character young men, and it looks like many of these picks have both.

I’m excited about Henning, he is a special football player, but I’m maybe even more excited about the two great RBs. The RB room was already deep in talent, this suggests a stronger commitment to the run game, and with Ka’Deem orchestrating things it’s gonna be interesting to say the least.

Some random thoughts about the Argo draft:
.On the whole a reasonably good draft with an emphasis on potential.
. Henning could well become an all star OT in the future. Probably has the highest ceiling on any player in the draft
. Good to see the team draft a couple of RBs though Smith would probably have been available in later rounds
. John was a surprise Not worth a #16 spot. Too many really good players were still on the board at that time.
. Team needed WRs. Ulm will be a good depth receiver right away and Quayson offers potential for the future
. Also glad team didn't take players already signed by NFL teams
. Much rather see Argos taking Parasilidis, than a future player who may never turn up.
. Talking about Parasilidis -- love seeing a player like him, getting a chance

Smith and John were reaches for sure, but I think they are offset by the great value on the McKenzie and Ulm picks. Ferguson’s mock draft had McKenzie going at #12 and Ulm at #15.

I watched a fair bit of the 3Down Nation's CFL Draft webcast with our own Ben Grant on the broadcast and I thought that Ben's evaluation that the Argos draft selections were strange was apt. Some of the higher picks such as Smith and John were considered to be lower rated picks whereas Ulm and McKenzie were chosen lower than their pre-draft ratings. As for some of Ben's evaluations, I thought that he is kinda right on Isaiah Smith's running style after watching him last fall for Laurier. He is a big back but tends to bounce outside more often than not which he can easily get away with in the OUA but will be easily found out at the pro level. I really like the pick of Parsalidis as he is a ferocious blocker.

All of the players the Argos drafted should be at TC, outside of Henning if he sticks around the NFL.

Looking at who might make the roster or an impact:

Henning i guess as a 7th O-lineman dressed; could use him as a surprise tight end weapon the odd time too.

Ulm likely as a depth receiver, though he could face a good challenge from undrafted last year / FA signing Tristan Ready who was in the top 10 in U Sports receiving last season; Quayson will be in tough, and wonder if he might return for another year of college ball.

Nice to see the Argos (I'm stunned basically) draft 2 RBs; but it remains to be seen what role or chance a Canadian will get at RB with the new Miller offence - a guy who plays and gets some carries like an Adeboboye, or just a little used "depth" guy and special teamer? Smith would have the inside track if they keep one, with his size and fullback work ability; but love to see Mombo get a real chance to compete for real / full-time tailback work - 215 size and runs a 4.55 forty - doubt he will get that chance, but you never know; and maybe he might get a PR spot to develop, or maybe ends up cut at TC

2 DBs drafted - like last year, and again - WTF happened with A-Dadzie and Masuka from last year's draft ? Both Gauthier & John are athletic DBs who were productive college ball players; Gauthier a true corner with speed and big play INT skills; I wonder if either will be viewed as safety projects? I'll bet on just one of them making the team - maybe the higher drafted John, but IMO Gauthier is worth keeping as a guy who could play anywhere in a CFL secondary, even just for good ole depth

Another interior LB type added in McKenzie (and a guy who was in the Scouting Bureau top 20, like Ulm, falls later in the draft?) - good US college ball resume, but he is up against some talent and veteran Canadian inside LB types (Cassar, Varga, Herdman-Reed, Harelimana and last year's pick Rayam, all behind starter Judge); no way they can keep all of those guys, and maybe the cheaper rookies win out for a spot if they can play STs well ?

Vrudgenhil is a decent interior O-line prospect who might surprise.

Good idea to add a kicker, i guess - even if the guy has little chance to make the game roster?

Parsalidis - is a tough fullback type, but will Miller's offence deploy one more than a couple of plays a game?. plus Smith at 230 could likely fill the role.
