I expected a tough battle of 2 powerful ground attack teams in Western vs. Windsor, but instead it was a slaughter. Western have the better run game and also a good passing QB in Hillock; and clearly the better D it seems.

Out West, Bisons win an overtime high scoring game vs. Alberta; Bisons QB Tachinski rushes for close to 150 yards AND passes for well over 250 = dual threat production !

j-ski wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 11:25 am I watched at least a portion of all three OUA quarterfinals and here are my thoughts.

In the Mac-Western game, not surprisingly Western won big. I still hope that Evan Hillock gets a chance to try out in the CFL (but I doubt he will). With the way he throws darts, and his arm motion, you can tell he has a baseball background. He sometimes reminds me of Patrick Mahommes. I think Western running back Keanu Yazbeck will probably make the CFL. He seems to have the quickness going through the line that a pro RB needs. Kind of reminds of Jessie Lumsden. I hope he doesn't have Jessie's injury problems. In a CFL that supports Canadians, Mac quarterback Keegan Hall would get a chance to sit on a roster for a couple of years and develop. He has talent. But sadly he won't get a chance.

In the Ottawa-Guelph game, Guelph won. The Ottawa player that impressed me most was Noah Avery a big 6-4 220 lb receiver, who I believe could make the CFL as a special team player first, and in eventually fill in as receiver. Charles Asselin although impressive at the OUA level, I don't know if he has the body for the pros. Maybe he can make it as a Demski type player. I think Guelph receiver Vyshonne Janusas will join Guelph alumni Smith (in Hamilton), Barnes (in Calgary) and Schaffer-Baker (in Sask) in the CFL. Of the Guelph running backs, Donavin Milloy, Caleb Sargeant, and Isaiah Smith, I think Milloy and Sargeant might be too small for the CFL. Isaiah Smith is the “physical specimen” at 6-1 225 lbs but is coming off a bad injury. He might be the one who makes the CFL in a few years.

In the Queens-Windsor game, Queens won. Still feel sorry for Queens RB Jared Chisari, all heart, but I think this is his last year in football. He was signed by the Redblacks as a free agent this year but was cut. I just think he doesn't have the speed for the pros. Queens DL Darien Newell is in the current top 20 prospects list. American Windsor RB Joey Zorn has speed but I don't know if he has the other skills to make it as a pro. He would be eligible for the CFL draft.

Looking forward to next weeks games, Queens at Laurier and Guelph at Western. I probably see Laurier-Western Yates cup with Laurier probably winning. Laurier would then go on to play Bishops to make it to the Vanier. Good chance we will be seeing Laurier in Queens in November for the Vanier Cup probably playing Montreal or Laval.
I watched some of both Western / Mac and Queens/ Windsor on OUA TV - some pretty good football mostly.

Hilock is a good passer and that makes for a diverse offence with their usual power run game focus - tough to defend. Not sure they have the receiver talent nor the good enough defence to beat the best Q team, (IF they get past Laurier) in a Vanier.

Hilock will get no CFL shot, and IMO if he does ahead of Desjardins, Senecal or Tachinski, there is something wrong there, cause those 3 seem like better all-around QB talents with very good mobility (including passing arm with the 2 Q guys). Doubt any of these U Sports QB talent - best QB CFL draft class ever maybe (?) - get any real CFL look. Sad.

Looking forward to seeing how the undefeated Bishops can match-up in the National Semi, vs. the OUA winner; might be a killing but also could be a big surprise IMO, with home field and some good talent for Bishops (unless StFX upset them).

Bisons are no lock to win CanWest, but love to see them play either Carabins or Laval; again with home field advantage, the CW winner might surprise.

Laurier / Western = toss-up, close game likely.

2 amazing finishes to set-up that all Sasky Hardy Cup.

Wanted to see the Bisons win, but they blew it big-time; wanted to see Tachinski go to the National Semi to face whichever of the 2 Q power-houses (Laval or Montreal - toss-up?) - cause that would have been a match-up of 2 outstanding QBs (really impressed by Tachinski's speed and run threat, plus his arm - just from those highlights); both of the Q QBs are outstanding talents IMO.

Also going to be interesting to see if Bishops (thinking they will easily win the AUS) can give either of Western or Laurier a game in the other Semi - i think they might surprise with home field advantage.
