According to Justin Dunk, Niklas Henning has signed a contract with the NFL's Las Vegas franchise.

I was hoping to see the entire draft class at TC this year, but Henning is such an athlete I understand the NFL interest. I don't know if be would have seen much of the field right away with the Argos. If he doesn't make the Clown Show that is Las Vegas, he will get other NFL opportunities. He is an ideal candidate for an NFL PR spot to start his NFL journey.

Canadian talent and depth is the lifeblood of the CFL and a teams ultimate competitiveness. As seen by the Argo top pick (a CIS player) signing an NFL contract, the access to Canadian players is tenuous at best. You cant tie GMs hands behind their backs even more.

I can see a lot of early round draft picks being wasted in the future.

Losing Henning turns a good Argo draft into a mediocre one. With the #2 pick it is essential to get an impact player who can start to contribute right away. I saw several people say it was OK to draft a guy who received invitations to NFL mini-camps, because outside of Cory Greenwood they never end up signing NFL contracts.

Well I’d be willing to bet that Greenwood and Henning are far from the only two Canadian invitees to NFL minicamps who ended up signing down there. Is Henning gonna spend 5 years in the NFL like Greenwood before returning home? What good is that with pick #2?

They needed to pick a guy who was 100% guaranteed to sign in the CFL, like WR Nate DeMontagnac. I’m kinda surprised we made that blunder with all that experience in the draft room.

I am the one who said that and it is quite rare for CFL draft picks out of USports to sign NFL contracts after attending mini-camp. Greenwood, Taylor Elgersma, and now Henning are three who have done so. Most players who attend NFL mini-camps don't receive any contract offer. It's usually a risk worth taking for any CFL team.

There was a lot of talk before the draft about how Henning’s special attributes made him interesting to the NFL. I might take that risk with a pick in the teens, but with pick #2 I gotta take a guy who’s 100% guaranteed to sign up here.
