Without looking it up to be sure, I think the Argonauts have won a grand total of four playoff games on the road since the B.C. Lions entered the league in 1954. To get to this year's Grey Cup, they will have to win two in two weeks.

People want to theorize that the root cause of this two-game losing streak is Chad Kelly, and they're entitled to their opinion, and not taking away from the two pick-sixes, but there are other factors at play here.

The defense has been inconsistent, at best, all season. There has been a lack of consistent pass rush all season, which can partly be blamed on injuries. The secondary, which I thought was turning a corner against Saskatchewan has played poorly in two straight games and has also been inconsistent all season. Once again, this can partly be blamed on injuries. However, I daresay that the recruiting at that particular positional area appears to have fallen short. Can't work magic every year, but that's the reality of it. You can point and say that Kelly threw three picks in the first quarter, which led to 17 Ottawa points, but Dru Brown still threw for 350 yards.

I was dreading this game the moment I saw the weather. We can only speculate whether Kelly struggled with the wet ball, but I would've liked to have seen RD try and still go with the run when the team was down 10-0. Kelly had thrown 2 picks already and it could've helped to calm him down a little bit. If Adeboboye is limited from being a part of the running attack because of the injury then the Argos need to bring another guy in. I know that's easier said than done because Dan is Canadian, but it's turning a potential 3-headed monster into a 2-headed monster and I'm not sure how much faith coach has in McMahon either.

This is the third consecutive game where the Argos started flat. They were able to overcome that against Saskatchewan, but no against Hamilton and Ottawa, although I am of the belief they were never in this game. This is a team that can win games at home to be certain, but certainly not on the road. I don't like their prospects against BC on the road and I don't like their prospects against Winnipeg on the road. It remains to be seen what they can do against Montreal, Ottawa and Hamilton at home, but I fear that this is looking like a .500 team at best.

To wrap it all up, Coaches need to be better, Chad Kelly needs to be better, the whole team needs to be better.
Pretty well summed up.
Having a starting QB who apparently has trouble throwing a wet football is troubling and to be honest I’m not buying it.
Kelly looks jittery and confused and isn’t throwing the ball with any confidence even struggling with accuracy on routine short passes.
The Argo D blitzes quite often and doesn’t come close to pressuring the opposing QB most times which is rather puzzling.
Regarding the organization itself we have become accustomed to the Argonauts being amongst the best in the league at identifying and recruiting talent with a stellar player ops department, what is concerning is people like Alex Russell and Vince Magri have moved on leaving the organization rather thin in this area which could affect the talent level moving forward.

This year reminds me of 1985. After three first-place finishes, a Grey Cup win and an incredibly disappointing eastern final loss, the wheels fell off for Obie. Both teams played most of the year without their starting QB, for different reasons, obviously. And both had other reasons in addition to quarterbacking for the precipitous fall. But it happened back then and it sure seems to be happening again this year.
The last 3rd place team in the East to make it to the Grey Cup were the 1970 Alouettes.

We have debated ad nauseum on here about what happened with the Chad Kelly accusations but I suspect we can all agree that whatever happened in the week leading up to last year's East Final and then in that game itself has done long-term term damage to this team. They just haven't recovered to this point. Can they?

There's still one-third of the season left and they need to get some healthy bodies back in the lineup so I continue to hold out hope. However, these past two games have been immensely disappointing.
I for one am tired of hearing about last years EF and the one side of that story leading up to it. That's in the past, and I totally agree the team need healthy bodies back and that the last 2 games have been immensely disappointing.
Oh and classless post game interview comments by Adarius Pickett.

These individuals have not been replaced either as far as I know.

The overreaction to Kelly is hilarious and typical. I dismiss the comments from 2 of our esteemed posters because we all know they wanted Kelly gone to begin with.
The first pick 6: 100% the fault of Sindani and Nield. Nice blocks boys.
The 2nd pick was on Kelly. The ball sailed on him.
The next pick 6: not a good throw but bad luck too. That ball after the tip hits the ground 9 out of 10 times.
The 4th pick on a convert wasn’t even acknowledged as an interception stats wise until the last couple of years.
Sorry Ravi, this is not long term damage to the team. They will bounce back. So sick and tired of the morals police.
As for coaching, for God’s sakes, get Mital in the starting line up. Sindani and Nield have peaked as far as potential goes. Mital should be ahead of both on te depth chart.

Kelly hasn’t played well the last 2 games but to give some balanced perspective that was only his 3rd game of the season (with no training camp).
Having said that he needs to pick up his play immediately to at least ensure the Argo qualify for the playoffs.
Kelly has served his suspension, time to move on.
The narrative that Kelly’s situation last season has damaged the team is mere speculation at best and is being thrown out there as fact.

Kelly did play well in Hamilton. 80% completions and 300+ yards. He was the least of their problems last week. Defence sucked last week. He struggled in the first half yesterday, but wasn’t the only one. How many balls did the usually sure handed Nield drop yesterday, to go along with the 2 blocks he badly missed? I have absolutely no worries about Kelly.

Why would a team with a better RB(s), better O-line and better run game fear a wet weather game???

Dinwiddie has lost something as an offensive play-caller & thinker this year seems to me> The dinky little hitch screens to the wide side of the field that rely on receivers to make these great blocks and often result in 3 or 4 yard gains, or , disaster like the start of yesterdays game are just dumb, simpleton CFL football. A serious, applied ground game accomplishes better than 3 or 4 yard hitch passes almost every time, plus ends up breaking some big gainers when you have explosive RBs and the Argos have 3 of those. Did Dinwiddie get a call from the GOB club to tell him you have to use that stupid play cause other teams do? That moron play should be stricken from the Argo play-book unless it is maybe tried as a tendency breaker down near the opponent's goal line.

And Kelly is a very good down-field passer - intermediate and deep throws work with him, and spread the ball around to all receivers; and this type of passing game is set-up by a ground game - does not work the other way around. And Kelly is a mobile, run threat QB - he needs to be told or play-called to run or take-off early in the game, and this makes the D look for this and not always sit back in safe zone; and roll-outs or even semi rolls are still permitted in Canadian football, no? Kelly sitting all day in the pocket and then making a bad decision/throw is going to happen (has happened with Nathan Rourke on his return as well).

Not sure what has made RD defer to standard, simpleton, lack of variety CFL short passing game , dink & dunk reliant thinking, but it's frustrating and sickening IMO.

The Argo D is another story with lack of smarts, variety and aggressiveness. Poor, simple coaching is hurting this team bad this year.

"We are what our record says we are". - Bill Parsells

This is true for the Argos this year. We are a .500 team. Inconsistent, and mistake-prone on both sides of the ball. It was unrealistic to believe that the return of Kelly alone would herald in a miracle finish. As others have posted, he has played only 3 games, after having missed a full training camp and half the season. I am a bit concerned about some regression in his game.... in comparison, Nathan Rourke is arguably getting better each game. But overall, I am not concerned about Kelly and believe that as the season continues he will play better. But don't take anything away from opposing teams and their coaches... they are professionals and have enough film of Kelly to learn tendencies etc., so I take my hat off when they play well.

IMO, personnel issues are certainly a factor, but every team suffers injuries to key players. It has to be next man up. The biggest problem for us on D is that even when we blitz, we don't get enough pressure to affect the opposing QB, which leaves a weaker secondary even more exposed. On offence, there is nothing wrong with calling short hitch passes to the wide side.... provided the other receivers make their blocks, which is where we are struggling as well, when they don't make their blocks.

As others have posted, we are in tough for the last 5 games, and may end up finishing 9 -9, or worse. Normally in the East, this might not be an issue in regards to making the playoffs. But with the way things are going, unless Ottawa completely collapses, we have to aim for third place. With how tight things are in the West right now, the threat of a cross-over is a real possibility. No matter what, it sure makes for an interesting end to the season.

Gotta get back to the 1 - 0 mentality for each week.

Well it wasn't just Kelly's picks that have people concerned, his head wasn't in the game. He was throwing alot of bad passes the whole game, either over-throwing, under-throwing etc - some really bad decision-making. He was not scrambling or running, just waiting to get sacked, most of the time. I do agree that he has regressed from how he was able to play last season. And maybe that has alot to do with the fact that he’s playing on a team with alot less talent and depth. The whole team played poorly yesterday, so that didn’t help Kelly either. But Rourke is getting better with each game he plays, I don't see that same progression in Kelly.

And I had the same thought that Ravi had about whether there are problems in the locker room. The Argos have looked incredibly flat the last two games, no energy, no enthusiasm etc. so what is going on? They are entering the most important part of the season so it shouldn’t be an issue for the team to be get up for games and go out there roaring to win. Both they haven’t looked that way for the last couple of games, both Ottawa and Hamilton looked like they wanted the win more!
