Kicker Rankings

Back in the day, a newspaper was the place to go for the latest on everything. Who didn't read every word of the sports section no matter what sport. It was my introduction to everything.

As far as CFL, while there were often stats packages once per week , it was a daily feature to have the standings and scoring leaders along with the game summaries if there happened to be any as games were played during the week.

For some reason along the way they dropped the scoring race which seems like a lost opportunity for promotion. And yes, it is mostly kickers, but there is even some excitement from that. Could it be something as simple as losing the sponsor of that award?

It's hard to look up as well as you need to look at each teams scoring. I believe the current scoring leader is Sergio Castillo.

All that said, I wanted to share my ranking of kickers throughout the league based on if I were a GM and in need of a field goal.

1) Jose Maltos Diaz, hard to believe his nickname is not El Toro

2) Marc Legghio, there is a limit but youth and passport are on his side, made to do what he is doing

3) Vincent Blanchard, influenced by his latest game, strong and accurate, young, good looking

4) Lirim Hajrullahu, I like Lirim, Leave him be.

5) Sergio Castillo, gets lots of opportunities, money kicker

6) Rene Paredes, The real El Toro, season saver.

7) Brent Lauther, I hope O'Day is paying him more now than he refused to pay earlier. Having a strong year.

8) Sean Whyte, Carl Meyer is more exciting but Whyte keeps getting it done, good place at a good time, apologies for having him so low.

9) Someone from Ottawa, Strong history of good kickers but currently an open position.

Place kicking is maybe the most what have you done for me lately in the most what you done for me lately of all sports. And FG kicking has improved so much compared to CFL days when I started watching (no soccer style kickers - LOL)

There have been vet kickers who have had bad season slumps but bounce back to very good in later seasons (i think of Osbaldiston with the Ticats); the bounce back of Lauther this year after being run out of Sask. (and now they bring him back - LOL) has been phenomenal.

IF i was a GM, I would want - for a big game - the kicker who has the best FG % in the league, but has also shown the big leg to be able to kick a 55 yard plus bomb. This year that would be Blanchard, or, Maltos-Diaz or Lauther - who are all on season FG % record paces I believe.

Also interesting that Rene Parades - always known for his all-time accuracy, but was never known to have a real strong leg - has kicked the longest walk-off game winning FG in CFL (and NFL) history this year ! I hope he gets lots of recognition for that. The lack or recognition or accolades for punter Jake Julien setting the ALL-time pro (CFL, and yes NFL too) single season gross average with the EE just 2 years back, I find just strange or disrespectful - but not surprising for a Canadian in the CFL.

based on his performance vs Argos, you may need to move Whyte upwards on your list...

I had the same thought. Would have been best to stop at a top 3 as OV did.

Not long ago I tried contacting Genius Sports asking them to add a kicker option to the weekly fantasy as it can result in a nice score. Maybe we'll see it next season.

Kudos to Whyte on a great game. I did say I was sorry to have him rated so low.

The one issue with Whyte is that his range is limited. He really can't kick anything 50+ and likely has the weakest leg in the league (Lewis Ward would give him a run there). I fully expect he will retire with the new field dimensions coming in next year.
