While it may be true that some players are more pro ready because they are staying in college longer, there are some issues with some positions groups such as QB’s and O-linemen because of the offenses that are being run in college.RichK wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2024 1:01 am It is true that not as many CFLers are getting NFL looks as they did before, and I think it is because more players are coming out of college more pro-ready than ever before, which is because there is so much more money in college ball now than ever before.
So as an NFL personnel genius, why go with the older ex-CFLers who were probably tainted by that inferior CFL coaching and training when you can grab a younger blue chip near-pro-ready phenom?

Might be a factor; just not that big of one IMO - players coming out are still young & inexperienced compared to proven pro. The NFL does love their system though and lots of hype goes to big college ball stars in the NFL draft and they will give them lots of opportunity.
Another factor is the shorter contracts in pro sports these days - tons of known FAs to chose from in your own league every off-season.
And the ingrained ignorance & myopia is still at work: CFL players are inferior scrubs that us NFL experts already knew were not good enough before. That might be stronger than ever there. Yet when an outstanding CFL LB goes down there and ends up being one of the best LBs in the entire NFL as well (I mentioned Singleton is 3rd in the entire NFL in cumulative D tackles in the past 3 seasons), you'd think they might grab a clue that quite a few more top CFL players can be very good in their league as well ; but nope - stay dumb & ignorant = good for the CFL.

You listed 17 players over five years. According to a 3DowNation article, five took advantage of the window last year. I don't see any discrepancy.OV Argo wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 10:29 pm Ok, so i started out by pointing out the Ticats significant losses to the NFL after the 84 season: Brock, Wright, Johnson.
So to look further at that CFL/NFL period (say 85 - 89, and only 8 CFL teams in this period with the Als gone) - I'll make a (partial) list of star CFL players who went on to NFL opportunity (not just failed try-outs, but actually making an NFL roster and dressing, playing or getting serious starting/playing time):
RB - Willard Reaves, Gill Fenerty; receiver/returners - Terry Greer, Merv Fernandez, Chris Woods, Gizmo, Keith Baker; D-Line - Ty Jones, Earl Wilson (Argos); DBs - Mel Jenkins, Bennie Thompson, Carl Brazley, Roy Bennett, James Jefferson; kickers - Hank Illesic, Dean Dorsey, Jerry Kauric
So now, in comparison, you make a list of star CFL players who in the past 5 CFL seasons or so (say 2018 - 23 (no 2020 CFL season), who have went on to significant NFL opportunity and made rosters there (in a time of more NFL teams with larger rosters). I'll give you a bit of a head start: Alex Singleton (3rd in the entire NFL in combined defensive tackles over the past 3 seasons till he got injured this year); James Vaughters (Stamps to NFL and back to Stamps this year); Dee Alford (star Bomber DB now a starter for the Falcons); might be a couple more ...
Then ask yourself - why the big discrepancy? Surely if the opportunities are the same as always as you claim ... ?

Nope - I listed 17 players who made NFL rosters and actually played some or lots there; there were plenty more who had try-out but did not stick. And sorry if u can't see.argolio wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 1:04 amYou listed 17 players over five years. According to a 3DowNation article, five took advantage of the window last year. You actually missed at a few names, and I still see no discrepancy.OV Argo wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 12:55 pmNope - I listed 17 players who made NFL rosters and actually played some or lots there; there were plenty more who had try-out but did not stick. Eyesight is fine.
Re: Benjie Franklin
Just a little FYI on something that has maybe just a little to add to further cement the point you don't get: there was no "NFL window" for CFL players to have free run (if they could) at NFL try-outs back in the 80s period I am referring to; CFL contracts were honored then. But there is that window now, and yet less CFL players than ever get those "try-outs".argolio wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 3:06 pmYou actually missed at a few names, and I still see no discrepancy.

Re: Benjie Franklin
The NFL also didn’t sign players to future contracts then, so the window argument is irrelevant.OV Argo wrote: ↑Fri Dec 06, 2024 7:03 pmJust a little FYI on something that has maybe just a little to add to further cement the point you don't get: there was no "NFL window" for CFL players to have free run (if they could) at NFL try-outs back in the 80s period I am referring to; CFL contracts were honored then.
