CFLPA report cards

Post by Will »

Here are some of the Toronto comments:

Toronto:

"When told that I needed a surgery, there was little to no effort in getting a doctor to coordinate a surgery date."

"We’re lucky if we get one pair of cleats here. It shouldn’t be a hassle to ask for a new pair of gloves or cleats. I buy a couple pairs of cleats every season and never get reimbursed for this."

"We're travelling up to 30 minutes a day one way to practice off site. It adds an extra hour to our day. "

BMO Field to Lamport Stadium adds an hour to their day?

It could if they take buses. I'd like to know whether travel time is or isn't included in the CBA rules about how many hours players can be required to be on site. I assumed it was, but this implies it isn't.

There are also instances where Lamport has been unavailable and the Argos are forced to move practice elsewhere. For instance, Google Maps is telling me that it is currently a 27 minute drive from BMO Field to Centennial Park, which is one such place where the team has moved practice. I wish that the CFLPA posted all the comments provided for more context. The Argos received an A- for training and medical, yet one of the quotes is a complaint about something that I would assume fills into training and medical. Also, a Saskatchewan quote praised the food + nutrition on the Argos side, but the team only received a C there.

It was very interesting to read both the ratings and player comments. As this is the first go around, I wonder how subjective some of the ratings are? Was there a standard against which players made their ratings, or was it purely how they felt? And I would hazard that players who have played for multiple teams would be better positioned in some ways to make their ratings, because they have something to compare. It says that the NFLPA assisted the CFLPA in developing the survey, so I wonder whether there was some guidance provided to assist players in giving an A rating vs. a C rating. Because I recall reading that Kadeem Carey had nothing but praise for the Argos organization, and in fact commenting that it was closest to what he experienced in the NFL. Also, I believe Ryan Dinwiddie commented about how supportive management was to requests for extra equipment. And yet overall, Argos were middle of the pack in the league.

Not surprised to see that Saskatchewan was at the top of the league, as it seems to be a first class organization. However, I was a bit surprised at how well Hamilton scored, and that they outscored the Argos. Is that a reflection on the ownership's overall attitude and approach to how it runs its organization and treats its players. If so, then kudos to Bob Young and Stelco. What is sad for me, is that with MLSE's enormous financial clout, our team is not at the top of this survey, especially when you consider how lavishly its NHL and NBA players are treated. I know the CFL is not in that stratosphere, but the money we would be talking about to make things first class all around would be a rounding error on their financials.

I think this was a good thing for the players to do, and I hope it helps raise the bar across the league. Given what they put up with as "professionals", makes me respect them even more.

Unfortunately context is everything, one players gripe skews reality as to how the players are actually being treated which IMO unduly puts some teams and the league in a bad light.

We can't control what makes a certain market attractive to certain players.

I know people who swear by that cold pizza is the best. It is funny reading some comments. Not That I agree with and think players should be left with cold pizza. Personally not a fan. Piping hot out of the oven is the way.
