For the obsessive amount of work it would take to do either job there simply just isn't enough hours in the day to make it happen. The months of grinding and stressing over 1000 important details every day is too much.
Bill Belichick was pretty successful doing it. One could argue he wouldn’t have been such a successful coach if he wasn’t such a good GM too. The key is having the right supports and assistance in place.
One could also argue he had the luxury of the greatest QB in football history.

Bottom line for me is that no one, no matter how capable, can do both jobs well, given the complexities of modern football. And Dinwiddie is also play caller on offence.

I'm not saying it won't happen, but IMO you need a dedicated head coach and a dedicated personnel manager. The Argos have managed just fine to this point with a GM who does not fill the traditional GM role, but he has been surrounded by capable personnel people. Again, two of those guys are now gone, and who knows if Murphy is or isn't still around. I get why Dinwiddie might like to be GM, but if he thinks he could manage that role and the head coach role at the same time, I think he's mistaken.

It’s pretty obvious Belichick did both jobs well. He drafted and developed Brady, that’s not some luxury he was handed, it’s to his credit.

He was so brilliant that he squirreled the pick away until the sixth round, and threw everyone in the NFL off the scent by drafting Michael Bishop first. Genius!

Look, Belichick was obviously a good coach, but how did he do once his meal ticket was gone? How good was he at drafting and developing QBs after Brady left? This is all beside the point of this discussion so I'll stop engaging on this point, but IMO to cite Belichick as proof that Dinwiddie could manage all the stresses and pressures of both jobs is a considerable reach.

If giving RD both jobs was the only way to keep him in Toronto long-term, which very well may be the case, how would people feel about it then?

It wouldn't though. He would still get paid more in the NFL as an assistant, with the allure of rising to be a head coach. If it falls apart in the NFL he could come back here in a heartbeat at his price.

This doesn't surprise me. I've heard Dinwiddie say in interviews that his goal is to coach in the NFL. Why wouldn't it be?

Dinwiddie is an exceptional head coach and I would not saddle him with GM duty. The Argos having a winning formula right now and he's been a huge part of that. It's not like we need him to come in and fix things.

Exactly the same way I feel now. No.

And there's no evidence that giving him both jobs would cause him to spurn what he himself described as the life-changing money of the NFL.

No, but it might make him think twice about taking some bottom-rung quality control job down there. Or about taking a GM/HC job offered by another CFL team.

And Chris Jones spurned a big CFL job to take a Mickey Mouse position with the Browns in the NFL. Looked real nice on the CFL.

Face it and admit it, most of the Americans running the CFL would love to get a big gig in their own country, and why blame them for going for the money & prestige in the big league in their own country. IF that's a thing you like or celebrate about the CFL, hey, have at 'er. Same old / same old. Just "radical".
