From the Toronto Star reader survey in March, 1992.
It is noteworthy that 3 of the 10 listed were Argos. I don't think you'd see any Argos on such a list in 2025, which is unfortunate. The fact that Dunigan was on the list at #10 makes his departure shortly after this all the more sad.

That's a great find, Will! It's weird that only 2 short years later, the Argos would be drawing 12k-13k for some early season games.
In Chad Owen's peak when he won MOP, the rest of the Toronto sports teams weren't doing that great. I wonder where he would rank back then.
In today's landscape can't see a lot liking any Raptors other than Barnes and Barrett and maybe Quickly. Anyone on the Jays popular other than Vladdy, Bo, Gausman? Leafs are #1. They would dominate for sure. TFC maybe Osario as a legendary player, they also have 2 Italians, one is currently benched though.

Max Scherzer?
I’m thinking Blue Jay legend Richard (Dick) Lovelady and his 21.6 ERA should be on the current list.
Would love to see that kinda list from the mid 60s say. Would have likely been a 50/50 Leafs / Argos split. Dick Shatto, Dave Mann, Marv Luster, up there with Mahovlich, Keon, Johnny Bower.
Zero NFL or MLB or NBA stars. Maybe George Chuvalo though ?

Very plausible -- however, the article accompanying the list suggested that this survey was only a few years old.
