NAT/INT
Lately it seems as if almost every thread in this forum devolves at some point into arguments over the merits of Canadian players/GOB/seven-only etc. Perhaps we could all agree that any such discussions would be confined to a particular thread (say, this one) and kept out of other threads? That way, those who choose to engage in such discussions can have space to debate, argue, etc., and those who don't want to be part of such debates, arguments, etc., can stay away from the thread. Thoughts, everyone?
Re: NAT/INT
A good idea, Paul. As long as I have been a fan of the CFL and that is many many years, the Can/American ratio has been a hotly discussed topic.
Re: NAT/INT
Interesting shatto; I'm a long time CFL fan and always knew the ratio was a topic for the league, but never saw the type of discussion till I got to the internet and started viewing CFL fan forums = very eye opening to me - the dim view of Canadian football talent by so many in our own country.
So we could have a separate "ratio problem" thread (here) and otherwise just not mention ratio at all in any other topics / threads ?
I'll start with a new term: "the fake 7" (Canadian listed as a starter to make it seem like 7 but promptly replaced (after the 1st snap ???) by a preferred American; which can be a competing / lower form of "7 only need apply".

Re: NAT/INT
When I was a young fan, my first awareness of the ratio was when one of my favorite players, an American S named Zac Henderson, who was coming off of an outstanding season was cut so the Argos could employ a Canadian at that position.
Re: NAT/INT
The late Zac Henderson was a one man wrecking crew in 1982 and very fun to watch.gilthethrill wrote: ↑Sat Jun 14, 2025 6:24 amWhen I was a young fan, my first awareness of the ratio was when one of my favorite players, an American S named Zac Henderson, who was coming off of an outstanding season was cut so the Argos could employ a Canadian at that position.
He was replaced by Ken McEachern the next season, McEachern was also a quality safety.

Re: NAT/INT
McEachern was stuck in Saskatchewan for all but one year of his lengthy career but that one year was the glorious Grey Cup winning season in 1983. He was an East all-star.gilthethrill wrote: ↑Sat Jun 14, 2025 8:47 amNo argument in any of your comments.ARGO57 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 14, 2025 8:06 amThe late Zac Henderson was a one man wrecking crew in 1982 and very fun to watch.gilthethrill wrote: ↑Sat Jun 14, 2025 6:24 am

And that is something that turns I off a lot of would be fans. Especially when it is a fan favourite. It’s great that there are so many skilled position Canadians now. You can adjust your roster to a point where you can afford to start an American at a traditional Canadian spot.gilthethrill wrote: ↑Sat Jun 14, 2025 6:24 amWhen I was a young fan, my first awareness of the ratio was when one of my favorite players, an American S named Zac Henderson, who was coming off of an outstanding season was cut so the Argos could employ a Canadian at that position.
Re: NAT/INT
Wasn't McEachern injured and not playing in the GC in 83 ? A few years later, the Argos signed another great safety from the EE in Laurent Deslaruiers (88 season where they lost to the Bummers in the East), and he only played one season for the Argos as well (retired due to injury maybe?); add in Paul Bennett (one of the greatest rookie seasons in CFL history as an Argo) - and that's 3 all-time outstanding CFL safeties - Canadians - the Argos had, but couldn't hold on to ? - disappointing back then.ArgoRavi wrote: ↑Sat Jun 14, 2025 11:10 amMcEachern was stuck in Saskatchewan for all but one year of his lengthy career but that one year was the glorious Grey Cup winning season in 1983. When I started watching the Argos in 1980 OV, all I kept reading about in the papers was about all the ex Argos that were elsewhere starring...Bennett, Nick Bastija, Ecomet Burley, Neil Lumsden, Mark Bragagnolo...I'm sure I've missed a few.OV Argo wrote: ↑Sat Jun 14, 2025 11:48 amWasn't McEachern injured and not playing in the GC in 83 ?
