Running back depth

Post by paulwoods13 »

With Williams potentially joining McMahon on IR, Argos have brought back 2024 cut Khalan Laborn. Wonder if Walter Fletcher was ever under consideration.

Interesting question. Perhaps the cap squeeze doesn't allow them to bring in a guy such as Fletcher?

Laborn did show flashes of potential in the 2024 preseason, but got hurt during one of the games and was cut. I expect he'll dress this week, but with him having been in camp only a few days, I suspect we'll see Brown take the majority of the carries (whatever they are).

Hopefully with more practice reps Kevin Brown can perform better than he did against Ottawa. It did appear as though he missed some assignments and reads which could have been from an unfamiliarity with the offense and the O-line blocking schemes. Laborn would have more familiarity with the offense than Fletcher since he was in camp last season, which was likely a determining factor behind his obtainment.

Perhaps the O-Line needs to perform better for Kevin Brown.

Ben Grant had some interesting observations on his podcast. He believes it all starts with Chad Kelly not being at QB, as defences don't have to worry as much about getting beat deep and can play closer to the line of scrimmage and focus on stopping the run (AngeloV has said the same on here). The o-line has also been an issue as they're still trying to gel.

I agree with Ben on that. I have been saying the same thing. It will help, but, they should still be able to run the ball better than they have.

I thought Arbuckle threw the ball deep with effectiveness vs Ottawa though.

He hadn't been prior to that so Ben's point stands.

Well, one deep pass was a free play that really should have been an INT. Another was an amazing diving catch. And hit hit Daniels nicely in the seem, but not what I would consider a deep ball. Arbuckle has been fine for a back up forced to start. Definitely better than Masoli or MBT. But the fact remains, defences don't fear his arm like they do Kelly's.

You're right Angelo V. Arbuckle has been better than Masoli and MBT. He's improved his play lately and currently leads the league in passing yards. However, I don't think it's necessarily a fair comparison regarding MBT. He's only played a total of around a game and a half so far (yes, the last game was a stinker for him). That being said, he's on a new team with a new coach, new receivers, etc. As you know, it takes time to get on the same page with your new teammates. This is where Arbuckle has an advantage. I think it's a joke what happened to him in Edmonton. Despite playing well on a bad team, the fans were chanting Tre Ford's name, and is then shipped out of town. Even though he is currently a backup, I don't consider him one. From 2019 to 2024 (not including 2023, when he wasn't in the league), MBT is the league leader in both TD passes and passing yards. I've always been a fan of MBT, which makes me biased to an extent. I make no apologies for this. I will however, apologize for going off topic.
