I was think more in line with Tre Ford as the backup to a recovered Chad Kelly.
Dimwhittie can groom him into the kind of CFL starter that so many people believe he could be. The exact type of "project" referred to below.
What a tandem that could be.
Don't get me wrong here, Arbuckle exceeded by far, my expectations this year and as a backup (per se).
He's a good QB, but in my mind, just not "good enough"
Just not mobile enough, Canadian Football demands a very "mobile" QB in my mind.
I'm hopeful, but I'm starting to get the feeling, that Chad may never return to the form we saw during the 16-2 season.
Might be time to develop the next Chad more quickly than they anticipate.

I would take issue with the notion that Cdn football demands a mobile QB. Ricky Ray and Bo Levi Mitchell certainly were never mobile, to name two. Mobility can be an asset, of course, and if Ford ever learns the non-mobile parts of being a QB, he could become a great one. The problem I have is that he's now had four seasons in the CFL, including two sharing a QB room with an experienced pivot, and we haven't seen the sort of development you would hope would be evident by now. Dinwiddie might be able to get him to the next level (and I think Ford coming to Toronto next year is within the realm of possibility), but I wish I had a dollar for every time someone wrote that all he needs is a proper development opportunity.

Yes, Ford has been given opportunities and he hasn't been able to run with them consistently so far (pardon the pun). I agree, Paul, that mobility isn't a necessity. It's a "nice to have", but not a necessity. What is a necessity is being able to drop back into the pocket, go through your reads, make the right decision, and deliver the football accurately. Ford still has a lot of development to do in that area.

Also, I feel that a lot of fans think that all you need to do with a mobile QB is have them scramble and run around all day but when you roll a QB out, you're cutting the field in half and making it easier for the defence to defend, ultimately. Also, defensive coordinators in this league are savvy about "spying" a mobile QB and shutting them down, which we have seen happen to Ford over the years.

The BC / Stamps game today showed the value of a mobile / run threat QB; see it very often in the NFL now too.

The game has changed a lot in the last 20 years or so. As defences have become so much more sophisticated, having a mobile QB has become almost a requirement for offences to stay ahead of the game. The top three QBs in the NFL — Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson — are the three best RUNNING QBs in the league. Same is true of Rourke in the CFL. IMO an immobile QB is much more of a liability now than it was 10 or 20 years ago.

Hopefully Chad didn’t lose too much of his top level mobility as a result of his serious injury. As for having mobility in his backups, we don’t need Ford, Max Duggan is IMO as good or better a runner than he is, with the added benefit of size to handle short yardage, something Ford can’t do.

Agreed; and not that a QB just must have great mobility and run threat these days, but it is another obvious very good talent to have to add to the offensive tool box. Smart offensive coaches would take advantage if they got to work with it.

A number of other NFL examples now along with the big 3 you mention. And Davis Alexander looks like he can bring that to the CFL game - where IMO a mobile / run threat QB can be even more valuable than in the NFL, due to the much larger playing surface and only 3 downs to work with.

Maybe Duggan will emerge as another of those for the CFL game (hope so and hope it is with the Argos); but, he is not near as fast or athletic as Tre Ford (compare their Combine type testing #s), however, added size can help a run threat QB (and with short yardage power), and Duggan is bigger than Ford.

Just finished watching McGill's big (listed at 6-4, 196) run threat QB Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald play in 2 Q play-off games; heard about him and viewed his stats since he won Rookie of the Year in U Sports ball - tremendous runner, often breaking big gainers, but inconsistent passer; and this was apparent from seeing him play - inaccurate at times and made some ill advised deep throws into coverage (and not working with any all-star receiver talent) but still threw a bunch of nice balls with zip & accuracy and a quick release, and his run skills are obvious - fast & elusive. It's too bad CFL GOBs totally write-off almost all U Sports QBs for even try-outs, cause I wonder if this kid with some pro QB coaching & training could refine his passing to go along with that mobility and become a good pro 2nd stringer who might evolve to a #1, and in the meantime be a very good short yardage / sneak kinda QB with that 6-4 frame helping.
