Hogan: Catching Up With Terry Metcalf

One of the Argos big signings in the 1970's. Mike sits down with Terry Metcalf. Provide some neat insights into his time in Toronto and what plagued the organization at the time. Although, the Argos weren't successful in his time with the team, his attitude is/was clearly in the right place.

Great interview! This is probably the first time we have heard from Metcalf about his time in Toronto since he left. As an aside, a cousin of his - Bo Metcalf - played DB for the 1985 Argos.

My first Argos jersey was that of Terry Metcalfe....ordered from the Simpson Sears catalog as a birthday present when I turned 14. That started my obsession for the Argos & football in general.

I have always felt bad for Metcalf, as he deserved better in Toronto. This interview is a little bit of closure though.

I still have my Metcalf jersey, which was the first really nice replica the team/league ever sold (albeit it was not 100% accurate as it had Argonauts in script on the front). No longer fits, of course. It's great to hear he is doing well so many years later.

Man I wore mine until it was totally done. I can still smell that rubberized striping & numbers. Later on I ordered Tony Gabriel, Peter Dalla Riva & Warren Moon jerseys from the Simpson Sears catalog.

Watching Leo Cahill lose his magic in his second run as coach was one of my bigger disappointments as an Argo fan, and like you guys I’ve had a few.

Leo's offences in 1977-78 were painful to watch.

I've been digging into 1977 for a possible writing project. Some crazy sh!t happened that year.

Ha - yep - wild Argo days and a very different CFL style of play back then (a fullback - powerful Lumsden - with well over 100 carries on a season - would boggle GOB minds now)

Hey - Clint Longley & George Mira got to play some QB - surely these ex-NFLers shoulda dominated the CFL

But some very good talent on that 77 team - Peter Muller - a tight end - leading receiver ? (more stuff to mind boggle today's same old GOBs); some outstanding D talent - Corrigall, Nettles, Eric Harris (before he left for the NFL), Lorne Richardson; the return of Leon; and Paul Bennett had one of the best rookie seasons (IMO) in CFL history.

Back when Toronto (and way more Canadians in general) cared about the Argos and the CFL ...
