Arbuckle is an excellent #2 but Argos needed someone to do short yardage and I'm thinking they're keeping Doege for that role which means the Horn is the development QB and no space for Dukes.
A very sound plan, but as others have noted, why didn’t they sign Doege or another big running QB sooner? Short yardage was obviously a big weakness in 24, maybe the team’s biggest. But they did nothing to address it until the last couple of days of camp. Why not?
Did they think Dukes’ ability to run the offence outweighed the need for a SY QB, and when he seemed to regress in camp they changed the plan? Did they have another plan maybe involving a big body in a wildcat that fell through? It’s a real head-scratcher to me why they waited so long.
Doege is hardly a real big QB or known for his running (and 7 carries for 18 yards in his season of playing time for the EE does not suggest much); he does have the 2 years of CFL roster experience (and IMO showed some good passing form on that bad EE team); if they thought he was this great short yardage QB all of a sudden, that would be a head scratcher to me; more like they feel he is the better passer over Dukes and has the CFL experience that the totally green Horn lacks.
Mackie (BC) & M-Litre (Ticats) last season were very successful as short yardage, under C specialists and neither is a QB; the Stamps did use a 2nd round draft pick this year on Quincy Vaughn - a big body TE who was a QB before that in US college ball, and known for short yardage / QB sneak at the goal-line TDs - pretty sure he made the team and will have that role there this season. The EE brought in very good running QB Jackson Tachinski (6-3, 215) (Manitoba Bisons) as a receiver for TC and he just got cut - the Argos could have easily drafted him and gave him a shot at the short yardage QB gig and as a dual threat QB period, but ... who knew
Not able to figure out a good, short yardage, under C guy to pick-up 1st downs when needed, could come back to bite them.

Very good analysis here OV. The Doege situation is curious that’s for sure.

Surprised about Carey and Brown. Giving the job to Williams at this point seems premature. Never happy to see someone released, but it is indeed time to move on from Dukes. I’ve never thought he was pro level and many people that thought so were blinded by fandom.
I’m not as surprised about the RB’s. It is the easiest position to replace in football. So many outstanding ones out there waiting for a chance. It is the reason the position is not a highly paid one. Times they have changed. Teams used to build their offence around a RB. Not anymore.
Have to feel for the casual CFL/Argos fan. One year we have an All-Star RB that they’re selling his jersey all around the stadium and next season he’s released in camp. I get the reasoning, but it’s hard to explain to my friends and family. Player turnover is already bad enough. I don’t know a fix really.

The last three (current) Argo jerseys I bought were/are:
1. Cory Boyd #3, I bought that jersey in fall 2010 and he was released by mid-season in 2012.
2. S.J Green #19, I bought that jersey at Grey Cup 2017, S.J was an Argo through 2019.
3. A.J Ouellette #34, I bought that jersey in spring 2023, and Ouellette left the Argos after that season.
No more buying running backs.
Yet, what direction do you go? You never know in this league when a guy will be cut, traded or otherwise.
The thought had occurred to get a former player on this edition of uniform, but I have an OCD with that so...

- 49 players listed on active -- maximum is 45, so four will need to moved to IR or elsewhere
- Benjie Franklin is nowhere to be found, neither active nor injured. Probably an oversight and he'll go on IR
Update: Franklin is now listed on the roster, and the total number of active players is 50. So barring any transactions, five will have to be transferred to injured or elsewhere by Friday.

With the way players move in the CFL specifically, you just have to live with it. Unrestricted free agency after 2 seasons in a very low salary cap league, means a lot of player movement.

Great to see Franklin back. I was worried about that one.

When I saw Franklin carrying the Grey Cup Friday night with Wynton "Great Business" McManus acting like they owned the place, I had a hunch they were both close to returning to the active roster.

McManis, Mital and Kelly were listed as "limited" in practice today. Janarion Grant (ankle) did not practice.

I suspect that Grant was injured on his final punt return in the first preseason game in Hamilton. He was hit low and I was initially worried that he had injured his knee and that it could be a long-term injury.
