According to Naylor and Lalji, the Argos threw everything at Mike O'Shea, including offering to build a personnel department around him.
They're claiming that the four top candidates now are Austin, Steinauer, Mike Miller, and Noel Thorpe.
They could have just done this 12 months ago. They might not be in this mess if they did.
Are you referring to obtaining O'Shea 12 months ago? If so then how would the optics of that look with Dinwiddie just winning a second Grey Cup in three years?
As for my one cent worth (the rest going to taxes) of the so-called top four candidates, IMO, Steinhauer won't leave his position in Hamilton; Austin is a complete no-go given his stubbornness and involvement in the tire fire that was the QB room at Auburn this fall and I'm not sure how Thorpe would do as a head man (the only experience as HC being the Canadian junior team coach) even though he is perhaps the top d-coordinator in the league. That would leave Mike Miller who would bring continuity and a strong offensive mind, not to mention his relationship with Kelly. I would be onboard with Miller given the job. Now it's down to Rogers to give Miller the support that he needs from a football ops standpoint.
No. I'm referring to building a personnel department...

You mean like what the Argos had in 2021-22-23? Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end.

Can we get in the site's time machine and revisit the reactions to the news of the wonderful MLSE taking over as Argo owners?
At least this site doesn't have full-time CFL/MLSE propaganda swallowing and spewing dupes, like you find on some other forums; pathetic & laughable - but fine signs of the times.
Why don't you go back and find all those reactions, and show them to us?
At the time, and frankly even before it happened, I was supportive of the idea of MLSE taking over the Argos, just for the sake of financial stability and the size and scope of the sports holdings. I think it mattered that Bell was part of MLSE, especially with their ownership of TSN. Unfortunately, Rogers and Bell being hated rivals of each other in the telecom world made it inevitable that there would be a fracture, and it is to the Argos detriment that Rogers won out. We are now paying the price for that because it is obvious that Rogers could care less about this team, or the CFL.

Sounds like Keith Pelley is picking the next head coach rather than Pinball:

The best-case scenario here is that this is a harbinger of Pinball leaving his GM role (perhaps to become MLSE brand ambassador?) and we get back to having a football op that is fully staffed by football people performing football roles. The worst-case scenario is that Pinball remains a high-salaried GM who doesn't do much GMing, and now he doesn't even supervise the head coach. Yeah.

As long as Pinball wants to, I want him to be involved in running this team, and not just as a figure head. Preferably Predident. Okay MLSE, you don't like Presidents, call him a Caretaker. He is a winner, and he has vision, passion and he gets the job done. That being said he has never been a GM doing GM things and his salary should not eat up any part of the football ops budget.
Kent Austin if it happens may not be all bad. He is a former Grey Cup winning QB & Coach, understands player personnel, recruiting. His NCAA time provides him a pipeline for new talent. If he does come, I hope he finds a way to keep Mike Miller here and work with him and Chad Kelly to get them ready for 2026 and revamp the offence here.

Pelley hiring the next coach? I guess after having lunch with Craig Berube, he is now an expert.
The worst case scenario you have outlined is just that.. the worst possible case. Pinball is a great ambassador for the game, our city, and the team. But if he won't or can't get his hands dirty and do the GM job, then he should step aside.

The bolded sentence is at the heart of what's wrong with this org and what makes me so pessimistic for 2026. The org appears to be spending a good chunk of the limited amount of money available to build and maintain a robust football operation on something else.

Pinball's strength is in his ability to create a vision, to enable, motivate and encourage others to work to realize that vision. Yes, that is more of a role that a CEO or president plays but that is what he does exceedingly well. He is also the face of the Argos and creates good relationships with the media, fans and politicians. Murphy is in effect carrying the role of GM.
Where the Argos really need help is in scouting and recruiting. It is obvious many of the players brought in last year were not up to the task. The draft was underwhelming. It appears the team has never truly replaced those who did this job in the past.

Not only have Magri and Russell not been replaced, but Murphy's recruiting has to be questioned. Of the new players brought into camp this year from outside the CFL, who impressed other than Slywka? And as good as Pinball is at creating a vision and enabling motivating and encourage others to work to realize that vision, can we really afford to have that work paid for out of the the ops cap budget? Is his salary (and Dinwiddie's) a major reason why the football dept has been so stripped down? Is there any reason to believe the next head coach's salary will be low enough to allow for the addition of new scouts and personnel people, and for hiring of the right assistant coaches (cf. the Monson fiasco)? We all love Pinball -- he's the greatest Argonaut of all time, by a zillion miles -- but are we hamstrung by his current place and role in the mgmt structure?
