Where does this receiving corps rank for you?

Post by Will »

Damonte Coxie, Dave Ungerer III, Makai Polk, Tyler Kahmann, Kevin Mital (Depth Pieces: Jake Herslow, Dymere Miller).Three of these players have already reached 1,000 yards with an outside shot for Mital. 4 x receivers would be unprecedented for an Argo group. How compare it to some of the others?

2019: S.J Green, Derrel Walker, Armanti Edwards (bad team mind you), but all 3 went over 1000
2005: Robert Baker, Tony Miles, Arland Bruce III, Andre Talbot, R. Jay Soward, 3 went over 1000 and Talbot was very solid
1997: Derrell Mitchell, Paul Masotti, Pinball, Robert Drummond, Andre Kirwan, Duane Dmytryshyn (tried my best), possible had 4 1000 yard receivers if Drummond didn't get help
1991: Rocket, D.K Smith, David Williams, Pinball, Paul Masotti, Jeff Boyd, Andrew Murray - probably gets my vote for the starting 4 (+ Pinball) by end of the year
1983: Terry Greer, Emanuel Tolbert, Paul Pearson, Cedric Minter, Geoff Townsend - two 1000 yard receivers (1 2000 yards), Pearson might have gone over in 18 game season

I still give nod to 1991 group. Also realize I am cheating by including running backs for some of them.

Yeah - pure talent wise, the 91 corps is hard to beat: DK & Masotti are both all-time Argo receivers (if you could make up any 5 pack) IMO; then the Rocket was a blazing fast, dangerous deep threat; and Williams & Boyd did not play a full Argo season that year, but both were outstanding CFL receivers; and Andrew Murray was solid (i think Dunigan liked him).

This year's group is excellent though. Maybe #2 on the list ?

And I wouldn't include RBs in a list of receiving corps' - even though some were great / valuable at catching passes; Pinball was maybe more of a slotback by 97, but still a guy who could take hand-offs and make yardage; Rocket could do that too; Andre Durie was another such hybrid type. Not sure why the CFL does not feature anymore of these types, but it's the same old / copy-cat league now.

The Argos have been blessed with outstanding receiving talent over the years. 1983 was quite the season. 16 games and Greer is over 2,000 and Tolbert and Minter each over 1,000. Pearson for sure over 1,000 with 18 games.
1983, 1991, 1997 were Grey Cup Championship years so I think they should be given top consideration. Each had HOF QBs throwing the ball. Greers 2,000 yards is such an achievement he counts as 2 receivers, but he did it with the rest of the team on a torrid pace, not in isolation and with 2 QBs sharing the load. Thats how good that team was. So I will give '83 the slight edge.

Compared to Stampeders 1994 when Allen Pitts broke Terry Greers record in 18 games. Flutie QBd Calgary, and threw for 5,700 yards, but no other receiver went over 1,000 on the team, they did not play in or win Grey Cup that season. Flutie was league MOP.
The 1983 Argos are among the greatest CFL teams to ever play.

QB has a lot to do with it. 2019 was MBT's breakout season. That receiving corps was special with S.J. Green and Derel Walker imo.

Walker had slightly more than 1000 yards that year but, for what they were paying him, he should have been at 1500 plus. I felt that he was a disappointment that year and he never really was the same after that.

Walker was a panic buy and drastic overpay (by Jim Popp) as the Argos waited too long for Bo Levi to decide on the bloated contract the Argos offered him while free agents were signing elsewhere.

It's the '91 team for me, followed by '97. For me the enjoyment of watching Pinball live on plays was more exciting than waiting for a replay isolation to see the moves of the wide receivers.

It appears that the much heralded " Bomb Squad" of 1995 isn't going to be mentioned, then I will. Masotti, Fairholm, Climie, Crifo & Branch where supposed to team with QB Kent Austin to form a prolific aerial attack. Toronto Sun even had a full page color photo of them wearing pilot gear just prior to that forgettable regular season.

I feel like the only time that 1995 offence looked good was the season finale win over a powerhouse Stampeders team.
