The CFL reduced the endzones in 1986. Scoring went up.IssuesMcgee wrote: ↑Sat Oct 18, 2025 1:09 pmI forgot to mention the higher scoring. Shrinking the endzone, eliminating opportunities to score and adopting rules from a league with lower scores will most certainly lead to higher scoring!
FGs up to 40 yards have a 95% success rate, so I get moving the goalposts to make it more challenging. The NFL moved goalposts three times in its history, and had them on the goal line from 1933-73. NCAA goalposts were moved from the goal line to the end line in 1927, widened to 23 ft 4 in in 1959, and then narrowed to the CFL/NFL standard in 1991. The CFL can always move them again if scoring is affected too much. Change doesn't have to be permanent.
Like it or not, singles for punts and especially missed FGs have a terrible reputation for casual fans, which the CFL is trying to attract. I have long advocated for the pre-2024 kick-off rule to be universal for all kicks (no point unless a player concedes or is tackled in the endzone), though for reasons I don't get the league went the other way in 2024 by making kick-off rules the same as punts and missed FGs.
